YMMV / Star Trek Deep Space Nine S 05 E 11 The Darkness And The Light

Go To

  • Franchise Original Sin: The episode was co-written by Ronald D. Moore and Bryan Fuller (the latter's first time working on the franchise, in fact), and some feel that it's an early sign of what Star Trek: Discovery would be criticised for: a depressing Crapsack World, and main protagonists that aren't particularly sympathetic.
  • Nightmare Fuel: During the climax, Silarin plans to force Kira to go into labor so that he can remove the O'Briens' child from her womb and kill Kira. Kira warns him that the baby isn't Bajoran and that it will be too soon for the baby to be born.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Considering that Silarin Prin specifically takes care not to harm any innocent bystanders with his assassinations, and neither Kira nor any of her other resistance colleagues shows any sign of regretting their past actions, it's not too surprising that some fans find Prin a far more sympathetic character than any of the people he's killing.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: While Kira is supposed to be put on a Broken Pedestal in this episode, some viewers were more alarmed than expected by her actions, which include defending the murder of a man's family (possibly including children) as well as putting her unborn surrogate child in peril.
