YMMV / Star Trek: Deep Space Nine S01E01/E02 "Emissary"

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Are the Prophets really as ignorant about corporeal life as they make themselves out to be, or it's all a ruse because they knew that Sisko having a personal realization in the middle of explaining things to weird aliens would be the best way for him to get Moving Beyond Bereavement?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Odo says that the answers to who he really is might be on the other side of the wormhole. A few seasons later and he'll be proven right in the worst way.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Sisko makes a "Not bad" face nearly two decades before President Obama.
  • Never Live It Down: Sisko gets a lot of flak over the scene where he personally blames Picard for Wolf 359, since it's well-established to TNG viewers that Picard was a victim, not a participant (but less so to characters in-universe). So much so that people seem to genuinely forget that Sisko reconciled with him and parted on good terms at the end of the episode. This is especially wrong because the episode itself goes out of its way to show this is not a rational reaction but Sisko being unable to deal with his wife's death and lashing out at the only target he can reach; the man with the face of his wife's killer. Once Sisko has his wormhole experience he clearly starts dealing better and putting the blame where it belongs.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The episode opens with a flashback to the Battle of Wolf 359 from Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was an Offscreen Moment of Awesome at the time and the Enterprise only saw the aftermath. This episode gives it the moment it deserves.
