YMMV / Star Kid

Go To

  • I Am Not Shazam: Spencer is not referred to as "Star Kid" at any point in the movie.
  • Nausea Fuel: The Brood Warrior is walking hive of space bugs and is absolutely repulsive to look at. It's probably a blessing that the costume is so cheap and awful, as any higher quality would probably scare kids to death.
    • Turbo spitting into one of Spencer's comic books.
  • So Okay, It's Average: While this film is a Cliché Storm and won't go down as one of the greatest kids movies ever, it does have some genuine comedic value (one being a Shaq reference, implying a jab at Steel) and does offer a fun amount of escapism and Character Development, as the main character gets to confront The Bully both in and out of the badass Powered Armor, and eventually recruits him as an ally. Notably, the film was written and directed by Manny Coto, who became well known for his work on Star Trek, Dexter, and 24.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • Cy not only crosses the Unintentional Uncanny Valley due to his weird baby face, he obviously looks like a foam latex costume with poorly synced animatronic facial features.
    • The Brood Warrior is not much better in terms of its quality with its bouncing neck and unfinished appearance.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The fact that Spencer's father never even asks Spencer about the bruise on his face from when Turbo punched him earlier that day. Instead, only picking up on the fact that his son smells like garbage, which Spencer had to hide in to escape his tormentors. It's sad that the man is so distracted with work, that he doesn't even notice something so obvious.
    • Cy showing Spencer his own memories of his mother. Doubles as Heartwarming.
    Spencer: (tearing up) Thanks.
    Cy: ...Your welcome.
    • Cy's apparent death, poor Spencer is understandably devastated.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Despite the title suggesting it, Spencer never goes to outer space. Aside from the prologue, the whole movie takes place on Earth, when it would've been interesting to see how Spencer handles intergalactic space battles, or even fighting on a different planet.
