YMMV / Spiders and Magic: Rise of Spider-Mane

Go To

  • Ass Pull: Nightmare Moon's inclusion in the story, not to mention her possession of Spidey, is seen as this by some. Especially concerning the future version from the fourth story, and her subsequent reformation being very rushed.
  • Canon Defilement: Venom's portrayal in the story is not at all enjoyed, showing absolutely none of the nobler traits from the Lethal Protector run, as well as casually throwing Eddie Brock himself aside to bond the symbiote to Luna. Luna's need for validation is equally thrown out of control here, with her attraction to Peter quickly becoming obsessive and leaves her susceptible to manipulation by the symbiote. Venom's inclusion in the fourth story only makes shit worse, with the symbiote bonding to Blueblood (which many see as a snobbier pettier poor man's Brock) and not only repeating Luna's possession by it yet again, but having Twilight be bonded by a fragment of it as well.
  • Crossover Ship: Peter Parker X Twilight Sparkle.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Sunset Shimmer and Wolverine for Rise of Spider-Mane. Spider-Gwen for Fall of Spider-Mane.
  • Squick: You'd think Peter Parker, a human, and Twilight Sparkle, a sentient pony, hooking up is Squicky enough on it's own. Unfortunately, thanks to certain information from Maximus, a depraved section of fans have developed with a penchant for depicting this series' incarnation of Mayday Parker as having sexual feelings towards her own father, Peter. Then theirs much fanart have Peter willingly engaging in sex with her which Maximus himself actually seems supportive of.
  • Sequelitis: It can be agreed that the stories following Rise of Spider-Mane are less than stellar and seem to drop in quality each time. Days of Friendship Past and Fall of Spider-Mane are the biggest offenders of this. In fact, the fourth story being so controversial and the fact that it drags on and switches perspective over and over, not to mention making Mayday Parker the most unlikable character due to her backwards logic, that he ended up having to rewrite the entire story to placate his fanbase (and turns out he didn't even complete it, rather just republished the original version). The side-stories and the follow-up Equestrian Avengers are seen as lazy and un-Spider-Man like.
  • Strangled by the Red String: What may count as the story's strongest aspect, Peter and Twilight's relationship, can also be seen as its biggest flaw. Maximus has the frustrating tendency to portray Twilight as a selfish, bitchy hardass on Peter in subsequent stories after the first, especially concerning his activities as Spider-Man, in addition to Peter's spinelessness in standing up for himself, as well as his general forced, out-of-character clumsiness. It's not helped at all by Twilight hitting him far too constantly to count as Dope Slaps, which borders on reversed domestic abuse, which portrays Twilight in some readers eyes as a controlling, hateful Wet Blanket Wife who seems far too intolerant of his flaws. This was the exact same criticism Mary Jane was slung throughout the era they were married, but Mary Jane far better understood and respected Peter and was mostly openly supportive and proud of his selfless heroism, but at the same time feared for his safety, only scolding him if he overexerted himself or came home badly injured. While some would attempt the same argument for Twilight, she is shown to be far more controlling and borderline abusive whenever Peter tries cracking jokes, and in all honesty is rather ungrateful and disapproving of him being Spider-Man (not to mention neglectful of Mayday), whereas Mary Jane never once hit Peter.
  • Wangst: Something a critic pointed out, is that Maximus seriously overdoes it with the drama in the story, being so perpetual and frequent, to where it first starts off laughably before becoming downright cringy. While Spider-Man's angst and self-doubt is and always has been a core aspect of his character, it's just thrown completely out of portion throughout these stories, as each one has him brood over something, and really just aren't ever resolved despite scenes written allegedly for him to work on overcoming it. And Luna, Babs Seed, and Trixie's own moments angsting and Peter comforting all of them with patience unheard of from him in other media, while heartwarming at first glance with Peter hearing them out and agreeing to help them with it, start getting stale and annoying real fast as they never actually do move on, rather lingering and wallowing in self-pity, just giving a reason for Peter to comfort them. Another glaring example is Twilight and Luna's characterization throughout the story, especially regarding their mutual (obsessive) attraction to Peter. Luna's, in particular, leaves susceptible to the Venom Symbiote, and her possession of which ends up severely injuring Wolverine, Sunset Shimmer, Spike and others, obliterating several city blocks in Manhattan, and actually killing Spider-Man. And in the fouth story the exact same thing happens again. While many fans who enjoy this type of drama eat it up, many others point out that it overstays it's welcome way too far into it and would rather Max got along with it.
