This is a rather hypocritical way to complain about being excessively emotional. And NF is No Real Life.

* CanonDefilement: Venom's portrayal in the story is not at all enjoyed, showing absolutely none of the nobler traits from the ''Lethal Protector'' run, as well as casually throwing Eddie Brock himself aside to bond the symbiote to Luna. Luna's need for validation is equally thrown out of control here, with her attraction to Peter quickly becoming obsessive and leaves her susceptible to manipulation by the symbiote. Venom's inclusion in the fourth story only makes shit worse, with the symbiote bonding to Blueblood (which many see as a snobbier pettier poor man's Brock) and not only repeating Luna's possession by it ''[[HereWeGoAgain yet again]]'', but having Twilight be bonded by a fragment of it as well. All in all, people have given and are still giving Maximus shit for this.

* {{Squick}}: You'd think Peter Parker, a human, and Twilight Sparkle, a sentient pony, hooking up is {{Squick}}y enough on it's own. Unfortunately, thanks to certain information from Maximus, a depraved section of fans have developed with a penchant for depicting [[ParentalIncest this series' incarnation of Mayday Parker as having sexual feelings towards her own father, Peter]]. The fact much fanart have Peter willingly engaging in sex with her, and the fact Maximus himself ''actually seems supportive of it'' [[NauseaFuel is enough to make ya fuckin' gag]].
* {{Sequelitis}}: It can be agreed that the stories following ''Rise of Spider-Mane'' are less than stellar and seem to drop in quality each time. ''Days of Friendship Past'' and ''Fall of Spider-Mane'' are the biggest offenders of this. In fact, the fourth story being so controversial and the fact that it ''[[ArcFatigue drags on and switches perspective over and over]]'', not to mention making Mayday Parker the most unlikable character due to her backwards logic, that he ended up having to rewrite the entire story to placate his fanbase (and turns out he didn't even complete it, rather said "fuck it" and just republished the original crappy version). The side-stories and the follow-up ''Equestrian Avengers'' are seen as so lazy and un-Spider-Man like to the point where you have to wonder if Maximus stopped giving a shit by the time he finished the fourth story and thought anything was acceptable.
* StrangledByTheRedString: What may count as the story's strongest aspect, Peter and Twilight's relationship, can also be seen as its biggest flaw. Maximus has the frustrating tendency to portray Twilight as a selfish, bitchy hardass on Peter in subsequent stories after the first, especially concerning his activities as Spider-Man, in addition to Peter's spinelessness in standing up for himself, as well as his general forced, out-of-character clumsiness. It's not helped at all by Twilight hitting him far too constantly to count as [[DopeSlap Dope Slaps]], which borders on reversed domestic abuse, which portrays Twilight in some tropers' eyes as a controlling, hateful WetBlanketWife who seems far too intolerant of his flaws. This was the exact same criticism Mary Jane was slung throughout the era they were married, as editors and some writers were greatly disapproving of their marriage, as they felt it aged Peter and made him unappealing to the target audience. Granted, it was proven at every occasion that Mary Jane far better understood and respected Peter and was mostly openly supportive and proud of his selfless heroism, but at the same time feared for his safety, only scolding him if he overexerted himself or came home badly injured. While some would attempt the same argument for Twilight, she is shown to be far more controlling and borderline abusive whenever Peter tries cracking jokes, and in all honesty is rather ungrateful and disapproving of him being Spider-Man (not to mention neglectful of Mayday), whereas Mary Jane never once hit Peter.
* {{Wangst}}: Something a critic pointed out, is that Maximus seriously overdoes it with the drama in the story, being so perpetual and frequent, to where it first starts off laughably before becoming downright ''cringy''. While Spider-Man's angst and self-doubt is and always has been a core aspect of his character, it's just thrown completely out of portion throughout these stories, as each one has him brood over ''something'', and really just aren't ever resolved despite scenes written allegedly for him to work on overcoming it. And dear god, Luna, Babs Seed, and Trixie's own moments angsting and Peter comforting ''all'' of them with patience unheard of from him in other media, while heartwarming at first glance with Peter hearing them out and agreeing to help them with it, start getting stale and annoying real fast as they ''never actually do'' move on, rather lingering and wallowing in self-pity, [[LivingEmotionalCrutch just giving a reason for Peter to comfort them]], which pretty much seems like Maximus wanting a good ol' Angst piece. Another glaring example is Twilight and Luna's characterization throughout the story, especially regarding their mutual (obsessive) attraction to Peter. Luna's, in particular, is so all-encompassing that it causes far more harm than good, as her obsession leaves susceptible to the Venom Symbiote, and her possession of which ends up severely injuring Wolverine, Sunset Shimmer, Spike and others, obliterating several city blocks in Manhattan, and worst of all, '''''actually fucking killing Spider-Man''''', all because of her unhealthy obsession with him. And get this, turns out Luna had learned not ''one damn thing'' from ANY of this, as in the fourth story, ''THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THING HAPPENS FOR THE EXACT SAME FUCKING REASONS IN THE EXACT SAME CIRCUMSTANCES''. While many fans who enjoy this type of drama eat it up, many others point out that it overstays it's welcome way too far into it and would rather Max got along with it.

About perceived originality of the work, not quality.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: When ''Rise of Spider-Mane'' was first published, it was met with positive reception. However, as time passed, readers started to find more problems with the fic (ex:how Twilight and Peter's relationship was handled, characters being portrayed out of character, eschewing the popular main cast, in addition to the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four in favor of focusing on Peter and Twilight's relationship exclusively, in addition to completely etc., but especially Mayday becoming a technophilic TheScrappy who Discord easily strings along to the point of stabbing her father out of a false prophecy, not to mention having a generally generic crossover plot to begin with, with Discord and Norman Osborn teaming up, which leads to stealing his powers and becoming the Ultimate Green Goblin and mostly conquering Marvel's Earth off-screen, alongside murdering Doctor Octopus without any fanfare, Peter being butchered into a MarySue despite one of the main and endearing flaws of his character being he isn't reliable or doesn't know how to say the right things but still does his best, the fact that the Mane Six alongside the fan favorite side characters falling in love with him, and Twilight becoming his significant other, completely omitting Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborn in ANY capacity (outside an offhand mention of Harry in the sequel, abnd the main plot turning the Green Goblin into a magically-empowered EvilOverlord with RealityWarper abilities (something he's NEVER been), on the level of someone like ComicBook/Thanos, and when all is said and done, Peter ''leaving'' Earth behind, which granted has the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic 4, will be forever short their greatest hero because he never does return there, rather staying a pony and becoming a prince, which so many of the detractors find SO unbearably ''un''-Spider-Man-like to the point it stops being a Spider-Man fanfic as the main character barely resembles the beloved superhero in question.

That's sequeltitis

* HypeBacklash: Was somewhat inevitable given the fic's popularity. Take a good look at the like/dislike ratio of the sequel and compare it to the first one. To say nothing of the third, fourth and spin-off stories. People ''really'' don't like the portrayal of these characters.
