YMMV / Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: One scene has Felicia react rather strongly to Peter's cracks about her weight. The flashback in issue #6 has Felicia worrying about putting on weight from the beer she is drinking suggesting some issues with her body image.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: This series is also infamous for the sexualized art of Felicia, particularly her Shower Scene where she ends up using the showerhead for... other purposes. Many have pointed out this is in rather poor taste given the subject matter of the last three issues.
  • Complete Monster: "Mr. Brownstone", Garrison Klum, is a sociopathic drug dealer with a nasty drive to dominate all those he sees. Having murdered his own mother in youth when his ability to teleport liquids manifested, Garrison continuously molested and raped his own little brother, Francis, on a regular basis through childhood and into teen years. Once discovering that Francis too had powers, Garrison began combining their abilities in a huge scheme to make themselves rich by supplying drugs to the rich and powerful by teleporting the drugs directly into their bloodstream, thus eliminating any physical evidence of drug usage. Continuing to molest Francis at his leisure, Garrison also is known to regularly use his powers to inject paralyzing drugs into people, then rape them, with his main targets being young women and teenage boys. After avoiding an assassination attempt by a rival drug gang, Garrison injects drugs directly into their hearts, killing the entire gang plus the leader's wife with a smile on his face, and uses this same method to kill two customers of his to silence them. When his body count draws the attention of the Black Cat, Garrison paralyzes her with drugs, then attempts to rape and murder her, and continue his rise to becoming the most powerful man in New York.
  • Don't Shoot the Message: A Spider-Man story tackling rape is not inherently a bad idea. The comics have dealt with heavy topics like prejudice, poverty, addiction and abuse in the past. Unfortunately, the execution of this concept did it no favors; between the comic exploiting Felicia's figure for titillation and the retcon of her being a rape survivor feeling rather tacked on, audiences and critics felt the story undermined its own message.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: A lot of fans would rather forget about this story and its retcon to Felicia's origins. It was pretty easy to ignore given it was largely ignored after it came out, with its most lasting contribution being Francis Klum serving as the third Mysterio for a brief period.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In issue #2, Felicia likens the rapist Garrison Klum to Donald Trump. Since 2016, Trump has faced several allegations of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment.
  • The Scrappy: Garrison Klum is quite hated, with many fans just wishing he never existed. Although this was clearly the intention, this seemed to have worked a little too well as a lot of fans were so disgusted by someone like him appearing in a relatively light-hearted franchise such as Spider-Man that they turned off reading the story altogether. All in all, it feels like he would be more fitted to be an enemy of Darker and Edgier superheroes such as The Punisher or Daredevil rather than Spider-Man.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: As noted throughout the rest of this page, the retcon that Felicia was a rape victim and her becoming Black Cat was a reaction to that was seen as an unnecessary darkening of a previously light-hearted character.
