YMMV / Spectrobes

  • Anticlimax Boss: Krux in Beyond the Portals is laughably easy for a final boss, especially considering the bosses that came before him. It's a one-on-one sword fight between him and Rallen, no Spectrobes involved, and it'll only take a few slices to bring him down. Although he more than makes up for it in Origins.
  • Awesome Music: The series has quite the repertoire of awesome themes but the Final Krux battle stands out.
  • Even Better Sequel: Origins is considered even better than the previous game, Beyond the Portals, with better graphics due to being on a home console, a more in-depth plot, and some very challenging bosses.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the new Spectrobes introduced in Beyond the Portals is Torga, a living toy car that eventually evolves into the hot rod Torgazar and monster truck Torgallup. Much later on, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduced Varoom, which has a very similar concept as a small living car. While it doesn't evolve into a giant monster truck like Torga does, the Starmobiles used by Team Star are tricked-out versions of Revavroom and fill a similar niche — one of them is even Fire-type, matching Torgallup's Corona element.
  • Moment of Awesome: Firstly, Rallen's initial victory at the end of the first game, secondly Aldous staring down Maja with a defective Geo, and finally at the very end of portals, after taking out Krux's two Dark Spectrobes, Tindera obliterates his Supreme Spectrobe. Then Rallen goes one-on-one against Krux himself.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Namely the first one. It's not a bad game, but it isn't fantastic. The game play is extremely unbalanced until Portals, and evolving the spectrobes in the first game save the Evolve Mineral is a nightmare. Portals and Origins more or less fixed this based off the better reception.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Portals improved upon many of the problems of the original Spectrobes game, the most important change being that you now know how to evolve your Spectrobes and the types are much more obvious. The controls and raising Spectrobes are streamlined considerably for a more fast-paced experience.
  • That One Boss:
    • Maja's final fight in the second game. It's different from the other High Krawl boss fights, because in addition to Maja's One-Winged Angel form, you also have to fight Xelles, a Stationary Boss that can do serious damage if you get too close.
    • Round two with Jado in Beyond the Portals. It's a difficult fight, even with fully evolved Spectrobes that are at or near the level cap.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The webisode animation is very well done and quite comparable to some of the better CGI television shows at the time.
