YMMV / Space Ace

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack of Space Ace is heroic and bombastic, with plenty of horns. Standouts within the score itself that aren't Ace's Theme Music Power-Up are "the music that plays while Dexter is on the alien world, the speed bike scene,
  • Memetic Mutation: "Hmm-hmm!", and "the space battle".
  • Narm: The two times near the end where Ace yells "Take That!" at Borf and one of his minions with little enthusiasm.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • With the same music played in different scenes, the many deaths of Dexter/Ace, the low-res animation, and those sounds, the cutscenes from the ports can be just plain creepy.
    • The Evil Knockoff of Dexter. It commits suicide to try to kill him. And once it starts, it laughs. And laughs. And laughs. Even as nothing more than a head rolling away.
  • Porting Disaster:
    • The SNES could not handle FMV, so the entire game was remade into an action game where Dexter is a One-Hit-Point Wonder who is hard to control.
    • The Atari Jaguar CD version only displays the cues when it's too late to press them, completely destroying the purpose of a game whose entire gameplay consists of pressing the right button when prompted.
  • Sequel Difficulty Spike: Zig zagged. On the one hand, compared to Dragon's Lair the game is extremely frenetic and chaotic, and sometimes doesn't do the Dragon's Lair standby of leaving obvious ways out for the player to follow. On the other hand, the timing does allow you to do things like wait to input until Dexter is already doing the thing he needs to do, making those movements more obvious, and also unlike Dragon's Lair often allows multiple ways out of screens (even without becoming Ace) rather than having one obtuse solution.
