YMMV / Sonic vs. Goku

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Word of God revealed that Sonic got accidentally sent to the Dragon Ball world by Dr. Eggman's dimensional ray. While Sonic does wonder how he can return to his world at the end of Chapter 1 after thinking he defeated Goku, he's otherwise not so worked up about where he's at or that Eggman is still causing havoc with him gone. Instead, he's clearly having a blast fighting Goku and even considers traveling to other places of the Dragon Ball universe.
  • Awesome Art: The art is one of the reasons behind the comic's popularity and it is magnificent. The way Goku in particular is drawn resembles the art style used by Naohiro Shintani in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
  • Funny Moments:
    • After dishing out attacks on Super Saiyan 2 Goku, Super Sonic teases doing a "One Merciful Kick" - the Cherry Tapping kick from the opening of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and the climax of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) - but he gives an Aside Glance and says "Yea... Not this time" before delivering a powerful kick to Goku, paying him back for the one-inch punch.
    • When Goku turns Super Saiyan 3, instead of being stunned by the form like he was for the previous two forms, Sonic laughs at the appearance, calling him "Rapunzel" as they resume their battle and, before that, asking if his next form is "some sort of Gorilla form?" As he says that, Super Saiyan 4 Goku is seen in the background.
    • Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Super Sonic take their battle underwater... only for them to quickly struggle to breathe. While Sonic immediately flies out, Goku remedies their situation by using a double Kiai to expend the ocean.
  • Growing the Beard: Chapter 1 has brilliant art and the fight between the titular characters is great but the chapter is short as it has 17 pages. Chapter 2 is where the quality of the comic increases exponentially as the pages are longer, the art becomes a lot more phenomenal, the choreography of the fight is mind-blowing, and the strengths and weaknesses of Goku and Sonic are shown in display. Sonic fighting as Super Sonic in Chapter 3 further increases the scope of the battle and the dynamic between the titular characters is explored more.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Goku and Sonic's interactions, especially in the third chapter. They're clearly enjoying their battle and see each other as Worthy Opponents. When Goku fires a Kamehameha on Sonic, the latter is so intrigued by the technique that he asks how Goku did it, which the Saiyan obliges.
    • As the titular characters take their battle from East City to the desert, Sonic's adventurous nature kicks in as he takes the time to enjoy the scenery and even considers checking out other places in the Dragon Ball universe after his battle with Goku.
  • Shocking Moments: Sonic using a near-original attack on Goku that's inspired by the Sonic Eagle meteor attack he used on Nazo in Nazo Unleashed and the Gaia Phoenix he encountered in Sonic Unleashed is unheard of considering that, up until that point, he's only been using attacks and techniques that originated in the games.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Sonic makes a nod to Super Saiyan 4 by asking Goku if he has "some sort of Gorilla form?" KAD Productions is not a fan of the form.
