YMMV / Sonic the Comic – Online!

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: The overarching arc in which Sonic gets framed and becomes a wanted fugitive has been accused of being this and is probably one of the worst cases of this in webcomic history. The arc originally started in issue #239 back in 2007 and would go on until issue #275 in 2018, a whole eleven years after the arc started. The notoriously long gaps between issues only adds to the fatigue.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Tekno, more particularly her Sanity Slippage, received an especially mixed reception from fans. Some enjoy the Darker and Edgier feel while others feel it's out-of-character and loathe her killing Set. That could be a reason why the writers brought him back. But thankfully as of issue 274, Tekno and Shorty have been re-railed into the characters people like.
  • Complete Monster: In this fanwork that has received Approval of God, these two prove to be especially evil:
    • Dr. Zachary once again proves himself among the comic's nastiest. Zachary begins his new streak of evil by attempting to enslave Super Sonic to utilize his powers to wreak havoc across Mobius. Quickly cheated of that, Zachary builds up an alliance of like-minded psychopaths he calls The Syndicate and quickly builds a new plot to destroy Mobius utilizing the Chaos Emeralds. Snatching some of Sonic's DNA by capturing his young companion Tails and nearly drowning him, Zachary awakens the dormant Shadow the Hedgehog and uses his powers to draw the Chaos Emeralds out of the Special Zone, consequentially creating a massive chain reaction of Chaos Energy that obliterates the Special Zone and the billions of lives within. Brushing off the death of the Special Zone as a mere side effect of his plans, Zachary attempts to use a device he calls the Chaos Siphon to agitate the Chaos Energy on Mobius to the point where it causes an explosion potent enough to destroy the planet. Eventually foiled and captured by Knuckles, Zachary contents himself with sadistically mocking Knuckles about his failure to protect the Special Zone, and upon breaking out, forces Knuckles into a Sadistic Choice to either allow his friend Tikal to die or let the Floating Island collapse. A total sociopath as always who is utterly remorseless over the billions of lives lost to his machinations, Zachary proves he's no less of a monster here than he was in the original comic.
    • Vichama note  starts as an enigmatic flunky of Zachary enlisted in The Syndicate before revealing himself as something far worse. Vichama is in actuality the sadistic God of Death, an immortal entity who gained access to the physical plane through a deal with Pochacamac, using his new presence on Mobius to indiscriminately slaughter millions of echidnas. Trapping the souls of all of his murdered victims within his dark temple before he was banished, Vichama is brought back by Zachary and at first eagerly helps the doctor in his plot to destroy Mobius, helping to obliterate the Special Zone by proxy. Once Zachary's plot is foiled, Vichama leaves the doctor to die before rising his temple again and causing mass death through Mobius, assuming his true form as the God of Death. Casually incinerating Knuckles when he's confronted on his plot, Vichama announces his intent to bring the "gift of death" to everything that lives within the universe through all the enslaved souls in his thrall. Cloaking his murderous nature with a posh demeanor, Vichama is motivated by nothing less than a desire to spread mass death for its own sake and proves to be an utter bastard of a god who more than lives up to his title as the God of Death.
  • Contested Sequel: The comic itself. It's either an awesome continuation of the original comic or a shoddy attempt at continuing the story.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: One-off character Turbo, who was essentially an alien version of Sonic, made a return.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Fans of this comic do tend to get on well with those of Archie Sonic Online — a similar online continuation of Archie comics — to the point where the two series have had official crossover art and frequently recommend their respective works to each other.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • In issue 261, Tails gets a parcel that he must deliver. He goes through one of the most work filled days he ever has, with Rouge stealing the thing, taking down a Tar Titan, and going back home in order to save his people from something. When he gets back, it's revealed that the parcel was a birthday cake for Sonic.
    • In issue 272, Sonic hopes that Amy was able to see his fight against Robotnik. As of issue 275, they are now a couple again.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One issue has Amy dressing as an Elegant Gothic Lolita. Several years later, Sonic Runners introduced a special "Gothic Amy" design.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Sonic's a dick but even he doesn't deserve some of the stuff that happens to him.
  • Moment of Awesome:
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Shortfuse, the original series pointless and despised Creator's Pet, is far less despised here.
  • Strawman Has a Point: While they were definitely assholes about it, the Kane Network's smear campaign against Sonic does have several valid points.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Matt Ditmer, one of the artists for the comic up to 275, and original StC alumni Nigel Dobbyn were both given a dedication as a memoriam of their recent passing.
    • The ending to Exit: Sonic. Robotnik rants and raves wordlessly against the restored Kinotobor, who deletes him and turns off the light, symbolically pulling the plug on the series as a whole.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Considering how much hell Sonic went through in the panels, and the Freedom Fighters (sans Tails) coming off no better than Sonic originally was, after the smear campaign was said and done, it can be very easy to want Super Sonic to just burn the world into the ground already. Not helping things was how long the issues are coming out. Thankfully later, it has been shown that more and more people are showing doubts about Sonic really being a criminal, culminating in his name being restored in issue 275.
  • The Woobie: It's kinda hard not to feel for Grimer in issue 240.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The webcomic is a Fan Sequel to a kid's comic that ended in the early 2000s, however it's aimed at fans who grew up with the story (or at least got into it as an adult). It usually keeps to an Original Flavor, though some issues can get graphic (such as when Tekno underwent a Sanity Slippage and tried to kill a villain).
