YMMV / Son of the Sannin

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • Chapter 21 has this gem from Fu: "By the way, my offer of letting you touch them still stands." She's talking about her wings, but nobody except Shino has any way to know that. And knowing her, it might have been intentional.
    • In chapter 54, Sasori says to Hinata "I want your whole body". Obviously he means to make her into a new puppet, but that can also be taken in a very different way.
    • In chapter 127, Naruto tells Hinata to ride him. Hinata begins blushing thinking he means... you know, but he tells her he means to have her Avatar of Kalika ride on Kurama.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Kaida and Hagane, Jiraiya and Tsunade's children. Some people think they're interesting characters with a lot of potential, while others think that they're unnecessary additions, and potential spotlight stealers.
  • Broken Base:
    • The new teams. Some readers like them, while others don't, either because of the Genin placement, the choice of sensei, or both.
    • Naruto losing the final match against Gaara during the Chunin Exams Finals. Some people are okay with it since it gives Naruto some defeats and prevents him from being an Invincible Hero, while others felt that Naruto deserved to win that fight more.
    • The opinion about the ratio of victories Akatsuki scored in the jinchuriki captures is quite polarizing, with the most vocal ones expressing dislike that almost all except Naruto, Fu and Killer B fell in Akatsuki's hands (with Gaara being the only one to survive enough to be rescued). Somewhat counterbalanced by the fact that, during the last stretch of the Fourth Ninja War, Obito's sacrifice restored the deceased jinchuriki back to full life, while simultaneously saving B and Fu when they were on the verge of death after they had their own beasts extracted.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Absolutely everybody loves this story's version of Fu.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With True Potential. Given that both fanfics feature Naruto in a different team with Hinata under a female sensei that doesn't get much spotlight in the manga, heavy focus on the jinchuriki as characters as opposed to mere MacGuffins, and arcs covering similar topics (such as the Kirigakure Civil War, or Hidan and Kakuzu invading Takigakure to capture Fu), it's no surprise that both fics share a lot of readers. The fact that the authors are friends and enjoy and reference each other's fanfic helps as well.
  • Funny Moments: Has its own page.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Several to the Boruto anime:
    • Naruto and his friends learn to tree-walk and water-walk in the Academy, since the author thought it was a very useful skill, yet basic and easy enough to be taught in the Academy. Later, a Boruto episode that this is also the case in the Academy of the new era.
    • The Chunin Exam Finals has to be the biggest example: Naruto, Sasuke and Gaara make it to the final round and fight a three-way fight, but Rasa protests and claims that the two Konoha Genin are going to double team his son. In the Boruto adaptation of the movie's Chunin Exams, Boruto (Naruto's son), Sarada (Sasuke's daughter) and Shinki (Gaara's adoptive son) make it to the final round, where they fight in a three-way match, and Boruto and Sarada, the Konoha Genin, end up double teaming Shinki, the Suna Genin.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Itachi defeating the resurrected Tobirama in single combat, sealing him away using Susanoo. Even his opponent compliments him for this feat.
    • Hinata awakening the Tenseigan of all things. Furthermore, she's named the new head of the Hyuga Clan by her mother, and her first order is to abolish the Caged Bird Seal practice altogether, even shutting up the Main House members who protest about it.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: The author's own take on Kaguya Otsutsuki was notably very well-received, since as opposed to being a Generic Doomsday Villain with little to no personality, the story portrays her as a Well-Intentioned Extremist who lost her way after getting Drunk with Power, and not only is heavily repentant of her actions in life, but admits to have come to admire and love humanity, even feeling proud of the world her sons created, to the point of entrusting Naruto and Hinata with protecting it from her species' incoming invasion.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: This fanfic features some couples who never met in canon, such as Tenten and Haku, Neji and Karin, Shino and Fu, Mei and Zabuza or Shizune and Shisui, to name a few.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Whenever Jiraiya has the chance to take a jab at Danzo or voice his dislike of him, he takes it.
  • Unexpected Character: Judging by the reactions, almost nobody expected Rin Nohara to come Back from the Dead.
