YMMV / Sniper Elite 5

Go To

  • Demonic Spiders: Patrolling vehicles. They frequently appear when you're right out in the open with no cover around, and when one stops, others are bound to pile up behind them and also aggro if you're in a fight.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Many critiques of the game's level design almost exclusively reference the first mission for its linear paths and intraversable 2 foot high shrubs and walls. This is despite every level succeding it being far more open.
  • That One Level:
    • The third mission, Spy Academy, takes a big Difficulty Spike. Although the level itself is among the most gorgeous in the game, it comes at the cost of its very restrictive map design, with enemies hiding within buildings and a labyrinthine road leading uphill that forces Karl to fight through chokepoints after chokepoints, culminating in a close-quarter combat section within the Cathedral itself. In other words, aside from the beginning section, this level goes against everything that a sniper should do, as noted in the They Changed It, Now It Sucks! below.
    • Secret Weapons takes a Herculean effort to complete on Authentic. There are many objectives to complete, lots of patrolling vehicles, and elite snipers fucking everywhere who can spot you from miles away, and are either covered by another sniper or surrounded by other soldiers. If you trigger an alert near one of them, you might as well restart the level as they'll kill you almost instantly, or alert all nearby enemies. Also, sneaking into the base is pretty much a necessity at the highest difficulty due to the snipers, machine gunners and the King Tiger at the main entrance right in a wide open field.
    • The Kill Hitler mission has many problems with initially-narrow, single-path progression: in order to get to the Berghof, you must go through a tunnel, though at least there's things in the tunnel to hide behind. The problem is horrifically pronounced during an Axis invasion: the enemy sniper knows that you have to walk through that tunnel, and no matter what you do, the sniper will get a chance to hit you. Your only hope is to run and pray that they miss.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • A major point of criticism is the more-restricted map design, which limits sniping opportunities and encourages close-quarters shootouts, which kind of goes against the game's title.
    • Many lamented the removal of crouch running, as it limits your movement options, either forcing you to advance slowly while crouch-walking, or sprinting in full view of the enemy.
    • The replacement of infinite throwable rocks with a limited supply of bottles was also criticized, since it seems like an arbitrary way of limiting your ability to bait enemies.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A Sniper Elite game set during the Normandy campaign, but it doesn't have a mission on D-Day? This is especially galling considering the cover of the game seems to imply Karl took part in the D-Day landings, but that doesn't happen in the game.
