YMMV / Simple Samosa

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: The show in general is first and foremost meant to entertain, but one viewer interprets it can give an overall message about the nutrition one gets from the Indian cuisine being represented. For specific episodes, she also gives "Anda Bhatija" as teaching how nutritious eggs are, since its premise involves Samosa saving an egg alien from danger.
  • Americans Hate Tingle: It's a show about Indian food items, so it's to be expected that some Americans aren't interested in it. It does have a couple American fans if you know where to look, but it's mostly unknown in the States. The small handful of comments from Americans on Disney India's YouTube uploads of Simple Samosa content are primarily negative, due to the amount of perceived flaws present.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In "Mayor Gaayab", the Garam Garam News reporter announces that the job of Chatpata Nagar's mayor is open again before going into Royal Falooda's house to snatch the title for herself. The scene then cuts to a town citizen who is selling "real mayor chairs" before cutting back to the Mayor's house again, where a whole bunch of people are fighting over who should assume the role of political leader. The "real mayor chairs" scene only lasts for a few seconds, it only has a flimsy connection to the episode's plot without actually doing anything to advance it, and the chair store never appears again after that, nor is it mentioned or referenced in any capacity.
  • Bizarro Episode: Even by this show's SpongeBob SquarePants-esque standards, "Kasturi Khushbu" comes off as outright surreal. The entire plot is that Samosa wants to find some smell he sensed while he was sleeping. To do this, he goes around the world just to sniff people. The episode culminates in Samosa making a speech at a United Nations conference and being greeted by all the attendees farting - which, by the way, is the smell he's after. Then he winds up sleeping on the ground almost completely naked and sniffs his own fart, to which Jalebi replies that he had that scent with him the whole time.
  • Cliché Storm: The show has a tendency to use episode plots that have been done to death. You can find a Not-So-Forgotten Birthday, an Alien Episode, and a Baseball Episodenote  in Season 1, not far from each other.
  • Designated Hero: Samosa not liking how Cham Cham can be quite nasty towards him is understandable, but some of the things Samosa does to his rival are... questionable. In "Makkhi Makkhi", he bullies Cham Cham by scaring him into thinking there's a fly on his back, and in "Patang Hurdang", he doesn't bother to help Cham Cham down to the ground when he is lifted far into the air by kites, even after helping Vada from the same situation. In both instances, it's supposed to be funny since the two are constantly at each others' throats, even though Cham Cham did nothing wrong beforehand.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Suga, a character who only appears for 15 seconds, has gained traction because he's a Simple Samosa version of Suga from BTS.
  • Funny Moments:
    • From "Cultural Programme":
      • Vada's dreadful violin playing.
      • Dhokla's "advice" to Vada:
Dhokla: Vada, I guess you should break both your legs. Yeah, and side-by-side, you better break your hands too. And problem solved!
    • In "Patang Hurdang", Falooda cuts the string on Cham Cham's kite instead of the ribbon he was meant to cut. Kulfi brings it to his attention, but he snarks before the kite festival begins as if nothing happened:
Falooda: So what? Why should I cut a ribbon and not a kite at a kite festival?
  • Genius Bonus: To most people, the name "Sumo Momo" would sound straightforward, him being a momo who is also a professional wrestler who is based on Sumo Wrestling. If you know your Japanese language, however, you might also recognize it as the beginning of a Japanese tongue twister - "Sumomo mo momo, momo mo momo, sumomo mo momo mo momo no uchi."Translation
  • Padding: The show has a rather slow pace sometimes. Other times they'll fill 11 minutes by adding part of the theme song to the episode ("Comic Book" in particular had to use the whole song to fill its 11-minute runtime).
  • So Okay, It's Average: This show has never been hugely successful outside of India and is considered to have its share of flaws, but that doesn't prevent legitimate fans from popping up. Even some of the fans often regard it as mediocre, but with a little potential and merit.
  • Strangled by the Red String: The only thing that saves Appa and Amma's connection as long-lost lovers as shown in "Spa Wars" from being completely out of nowhere is that the official Simple Samosa website's character bios, which were released before the episode premiered, make mention of it. There's still nothing in the episode itself hinting that they once knew each other at all, let alone that they're in love, prior to the scene where they realize this and quickly become Sickeningly Sweethearts. In-universe, even Samosa's gang themselves are pretty surprised at this unexpected development, with Samosa doing a Jaw Drop and Dhokla exclaiming "I don't believe this!"
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The episode "Sumo Momo" has been accused of copying the Mickey Mouse (2013) episode "Tapped Out", since both are about the main character watching a wrestling match, bragging about how they could beat the wrestler if they tried, and being made to fight the wrestler by an unassuming friend who thought they were telling the truth. Since both series are from Disney, a company that frequently cross-references itself, it's hard to tell if this is meant as a friendly reference or a genuine case of plagiarism.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Samosa, egotistical though he may be, is still well-intentioned... which begs the question of why he still does things that make it hard to sympathize with him.
    • Right in the first episode, he ignores a man who is severely injured and clearly desperate for help and instead cheers for Sumo Momo, the very person who hurt the man.
    • In "Doctor D", he - along with Jalebi and Vada - block Dhokla on social media to stop his spamming even though Dhokla had no ill will in his spamming.
    • In "Patang Hurdang", he makes Cham Cham fly dangerously high into the air by giving him a bunch of kites and does nothing to help him. This one at least makes sense since they're archenemies and all, but it still seems like a bit much, especially since Cham Cham did nothing wrong anywhere in the episode.
