YMMV / Shadow Star

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Aki Honda's death can be this to some, given all the horrible things she did.
  • Complete Monster: The anime version of the Dragon Bearer of Trickster, Naozumi Sudo, is a budding psychopath lacking the Alas, Poor Villain demise of his original counterpart. A highly intelligent high-school student, Naozumi moonlights as the leader of a group of juvenile terrorists, sending his compatriots, Bungo and Satomi, to kill multiple people with their Shadow Dragons. Having purposely allowed the disabled mother of his missing friend to starve to death, Naozumi gives Bungo the idea to use his Shadow Dragon to destroy military jets as a "simulated air battle", intending to kill pilots without having to use his own Shadow Dragon. While driving arounds with Akira after meeting near Tomonori's house, he's chased by officers for driving without a license, and uses Trickster to destroy the police car following him. Obsessed with Akira Sakura, Naozumi has Satomi use Amapola to crucify Akira to itself to see if she is truly a Dragon Bearer. Orchestrating an attack against the Defence Forces, Naozumi's plans resulted in the death of numerous soldiers and civilians that were poisoned by Amapola. Fancying himself as a superior human, Naozumi's ultimate goal was to create a society where the "fools" who are not able to "affect the world" are killed off one by one.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Of all the human characters and shadow dragons, respectively, Norio and Hainuwele get the most fanart on Pixiv by far.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: If fan art is anything to go by, the fanbase seems to prefer Takeo with Norio and Shiina with Akira.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In its day, the manga was frequently described (both positively and negatively) as “Pokémon with guns”. In 2024 a video game would be released meeting that same description.
  • Mainstream Obscurity: Has a bit of a reputation for its graphic violence and Lolicon-ish elements, but the quality itself is rarely discussed, probably since there aren't a lot of people who have actually read it.
  • Memetic Mutation: The intro to the anime has a lot of parodies, mostly due to a severe case of Soundtrack Dissonance.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Aki crossed it when she raped Hiro-chan with a test tube.
    • Hiro-chan herself crossed it when she included her parents and Miyoko in her Roaring Rampage of Revenge. With the former, while they were a tad strict with her, they didn't know about the bullying she was going through. With the latter, she was the only one who didn't want to take part in the test tube incident.
  • Signature Scene: The test tube scene and Aki's Karmic Death.
  • Squick:
    • Akira pressuring her friend Ishida to have sex with her and loudly masturbating after he couldn't do it. That's not the worst of it, by far.
    • Aki Honda and her posse raping Hiroko with a glass test tube. As if that wasn't bad enough, they also threaten to kick her in the stomach while she still has the test tube inside of her. Which is then followed up by Hiroko using her Shadow Dragon to mutilate Aki and force its giant claw up her vagina as revenge.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The copious amounts of gore and sexual activity done to kids make this series come off as blatant shock value.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: It seems that a few readers have gone through the entire manga without realizing that Norio is male.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The first chapter/episode and opening theme song aside, hoooooh boy!
  • The Woobie: Akira, most prominently. Given all the crap she goes through, it's hard to not feel at least a bit sorry for her. Many other characters could qualify as well, though they tend to be either Jerkass Woobies or Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.
