  • Anti-Climax Boss: The final showdown with Erebus only lasts about five pages. After spending a good chunk of the comic building up to said fight, Erebus is defeated by accidentally biting down on a pointy stick and getting rammed into a tree by Atlas' antlers. His pack turns on him immediately afterwards for showing weakness and mauls him to death.
  • Complete Monster: Resher is an ambitious rodent yearning to take over the colony's council. Believing the colony should head to the city instead of waiting until spring arrives, Resher hires a group of cats to slaughter a team of scavengers in an attempt to scare the colony into leaving. He also repeatedly poisons Master Orim, the council's leader, until he dies, and tries to murder his daughter, Pict, once she overhears his plans. When Wix and Pict return from their adventures and try to expose Resher's treachery, Resher attempts to murder them both, and later has Kessel killed when he tries to save them. After Pict reveals Resher's schemes to the colony, Resher has his loyalists set the house on fire to cause a distraction. He later leaves his own rodents and the entire colony to perish, only returning so he can murder Pict out of pure spite.
  • Creepy Awesome: The Witches definitely qualify as this. They help bring Wix to Pict, arm Wix, then as an encore kill the leader of the raven cult so he cannot report the mice's survival to Erebus. Well played.
  • Iron Woobie: Wix. Repeatedly escaping death by Titan, almost killed in the feline ambush set up by The Star Scream, and ultimately finding himself face to face with the Big Bad, the Mad Alpha himself. He never once loses his cool.
  • Like You Would Really Do It:
    • Wix dying in the final chapter after the climactic showdown. Turns out that he just passed out.
    • Subverted with Orim's death. After it's revealed that Resher was poisoning him, he sounds much better and starts making a recovery, thus making it seem like he'll return to his duties. But it turns out that he already ingested a fatal amount, and he dies minutes later.
  • Love to Hate: Resher. He's your everyday moustache-twirling Manipulative Bastard who thinks he knows how to rule a colony. Nevertheless, it's hard to hate how ambitious he is and the lengths he goes to in an attempt to get what he wants, and it's always cathartic when his plans blow up in his face.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Nemesis the Harris' Hawk. As detailed on Somewhere, an Ornithologist Is Crying, Harris' Hawks hunt in flocks - which could have easily set them up as directly opposing Erebus' monstrous wolfpack. Instead she appears and disappears in the space of a few pages, never to be seen again.
  • The Woobie: The wolf with two eye colors. Starving, he makes a go at Atlas and promptly gets Curb Stomped. But then the true horror begins... Erebus sets the pack on him, and they dismember and eat him alive while a horrified Wix watches.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: A Watership Down type story about a colony of mice forced to uproot - and facing down a constant stream of horrific predators that range from More Teeth than the Osmond Family to outright Abominations. If the page image of Erebus doesn't clue you in that this is not for kids, nothing will.
