Tropes for the series:

  • Alliterative Name:
    • Harry Hooperman.
    • Betty Bushkin.
    • Susan Smith.
  • Character Title: Hooperman.
  • Dramedy: The first show to be explicitly dubbed one of these by the media.
  • Make the Dog Testify: A variant is used where the defendant shouts in court, "I should have killed the dog, too!" - thus proving his own guilt.
  • One-Word Title: Hooperman.
  • Poorly Disguised Pilot: "Nick Derringer, P.I." revolved around Hooperman teaming up with a pint-size private eye in order to bring down an elusive drug dealer. It never got picked up.
  • Talking Down the Suicidal: Harry does this with props (specifically a watermelon) in the pilot episode. While he talks the would-be jumper out of jumping, he brings up the finality of death and demonstrates by throwing the watermelon onto the street below. In a later episode, he tries this again. However, he decides against taking the watermelon out of the bag when the jumper says he can't stand the sight of them.
