YMMV / Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles

Go To

  • Complete Monster: The Makkine Supreme Commander is the leader of the mechanical Makkine, under whose leadership they plunder the multiverse. It has countless world razed and what remains of their inhabitants enslaved, or utterly destroyed if the world shows too much resistance. When the Unu fight back against the Makkine, the Supreme Commander has the race brought to near extinction while freezing the survivors in stasis and reducing them to microscopic size, forcing their leader Kagehito to see the fate of his people before enslaving him to its will; it sends Kagehito to Usagi's world to open a gateway for the Makkine invasion. When the portal is finally opened, the Supreme Commander sends warbotto and the mechanical beast to raze Neo Edo to the ground, planning to subject the now free Kagehito to a Fate Worse than Death. When the heroes successfully destroy the beast, the Supreme Commander orders the entire planet destroyed.
  • Crossover Ship: Shipping Yuichi Usagi with the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles iteration of Leonardo is pretty common. The fact that both franchises are closely connected, and that previous iterations of the turtles have crossed over with Usagi Miyamoto content certainly helps.
  • Friendly Fandoms: It's an entry into the Usagi Yojimbo franchise, so of course Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans flocked to it. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans in particular are fond of this show.
  • Les Yay:
    • Kitsune and Chizu have a lot of this; From Kitsune being one of the major factors to Chizu turning against the Neko Ninja Crew, to the b-plot from one episode being framed similar to a break up-make up storyline, and even the two acting and speaking rather domestically towards each other when discussing Chizu's desire to give the orphans they're looking after a better life. The subtext is perhaps intentional, as one of the preview images for the show on Netflix has the two girls forming a heart together with their hands.
    • On the Ho Yay side of things, Gen and Usagi have a few moments with each other that might raise some eyebrows. However, it's not nearly as blatant as with the two girls.
  • Older Than They Think: This isn't a first time an animated series decided to focus on a descendant of Miyamoto Usagi; Space Usagi would've told the story of... Miyamoto Usagi, but IN SPACE!
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The show is the first official animated series adapting the Usagi Yojimbo franchise outside of crossovers with various Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles properties... and it's not about Usagi Miyamoto, but his newly introduced descendent Usagi Yuichi. Suffice to say, long time fans of the franchise were unhappy upon announcement. While the show does have a fanbase, this remains a point of contention against it. Arguably ironic as many of the crew are big Usagi Yojimbo fans themselves or have worked on TMNT adaptations before.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Usagi has the same teeth structure as a real life rabbit. While a neat detail, it can be a bit jarring for some viewers as most anthropomorphic rabbit characters are drawn with human-esque teeth save for the occasional buck teeth. As a result, it can be a little unnerving when he opens his mouth wide enough to see his teeth line.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Much like the comics the shows treats death is a rather blasé fashion. Many flashbacks show deaths as violently as possible without shedding blood while the darker aspects of some youkai are retained (i.e. the Gashadokuro flat out claims to be born from the bones of those who died in war). That said, it is Lighter and Softer than the comics overall.
