YMMV / S.H.I.E.L.D.

  • Base-Breaking Character: Maria Hill is a very controversial character in the Marvel universe, for various reasons.
    • Firstly, there's the fact she was the first Affirmative-Action Legacy for very long-running and established character, Nick Fury, and unlike the African-American Nick Fury, who was mainstreamed through the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Ultimate Marvel, she had no previously cultivated fanbase.
    • Secondly, there's her rather abrasive personality. Fans like her for being strong-willed, stubborn, no-nonsense, by the book and "sticks to her guns". Non-fans dislike her for being, as they put it, a Lawful Stupid Jerkass. This is especially heightened by her animated depictions, where Maria taking the helm of S.H.I.E.L.D. usually goes hand in hand with S.H.I.E.L.D. turning on the heroes it once worked with.
    • Finally, there's the fact she's synonymous with S.H.I.E.L.D. being increasingly portrayed as performing black ops and being more blatantly "America First". Some fans love this portrayal, arguing it as more realistic, whilst others decry it as cynical derailing of an organization that, despite its America Saves the Day roots, was still an unquestionable Big Good in the Marvel Universe.
  • Never Live It Down: In-Universe and out, Maria Hill's often reminded of her role in the first Civil War and pretty much one of the reasons why things ended up escalating. While nowadays she seems to at least mellowed down to the point of doing things within common sense, it still comes up from time to time by other characters. For fans, some are willing to let it go while others have a hard time coming around to her for it.
  • Spoiled by the Format
    • Due to the aforementioned Schedule Slip, it has already been revealed in Secret Warriors that Leonardo helps bring about the founding of the modern organizations known as A.I.M., Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. after the Brotherhood has fallen.
    • In the pages of Red She-Hulk, it is revealed that some form of Tesla is bound to survive the ending of the mini and be connected with a ancient device called the World Computer.
  • The Woobie: Maria Hill, judging by her appearance in volume 3 of Secret Avengers where she recounted an incident during the epilogue of being confronted by a shark whilst swimming. Unfortunately due to her status as a fairly minor character her decision to be more laid back and less aggressively authoritarian was disregarded by Avengers Standoff to turn the clock back to her Civil War (2006) days.
