YMMV / Roxanne

Go To

  • Award Snub: More than a few were upset that Steve Martin was passed over for a Best Actor Oscar nomination, including Academy Awards host that year Chevy Chase.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Watch C.D.'s face when he realizes Roxanne was hot for Chris not him. There's a tremendous pang of hurt, but then a cover to hide it.
    • Steve Martin himself noted that this was the first time he felt that a movie was actually treating him like an actor instead of a walk-on comedian.
    • Roger Ebert noted this on his Siskel & Ebert review for the film in respect to Daryl Hannah.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • CD's speech to Roxanne under the window.
    • CD's chat with the kid on the roof.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • The Long List on the Quotes page, followed by a quick beatdown of the instigator.
    • The early scene where CD beats up two yuppie assholes with a tennis racket, answering the question "How can you possibly include a sword fight in a modern version of Cyrano de Bergerac?"
  • Retroactive Recognition:
  • Values Dissonance: C.D. playfully forcing Roxanne to remain nude all the way back to her house would now be seen less comic and a bit more predatory than when the film came out.
  • The Woobie: CD - even though everyone in town loves him, his nose prevents him from being confident enough to approach Roxanne. To make it worse, the film also implies that he really could have any woman he wanted but he's just too self-conscious to try.
