YMMV / RWBY Zero

Go To

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Most of the readers had already guessed that the Saber Alter Salem had the Blackened Weiss summon near the end of Chapter 26 to be Arturia long before it was confirmed near the end of Chapter 53.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Carrying over from the source material, Rider, Iskandar's, debut chapter saw the comment section flooded with praise and excitement for his presence in the story.
    • Of all people, Vernal has been getting a noticeable amount of praise in the Third Act after Raven's absence forced her to team up with Ruby's faction and she supplied some intriguing perspectives on Yang and Blake's dilemmas, as well as proving useful in getting the group to Atlas.
    • Karna appears in one chapter as Summer Rose's Lancer in a flashback. His popularity in the source material, kindness, respectful interaction and epic battle with Gilgamesh, and noble last request all combined to make his short appearance quite memorable and beloved by readers.
  • Growing the Beard: The first few chapters don't give a very good idea about what the story is about, being far shorter than the story's average would come to be and the author clearly struggling with beginning the story without overwhelming the reader with an exposition dump. Chapter 4 shows the first signs of the story's promise, with Arturia's fight with Jaune, Ruby, Blake, and Ren providing both the anticipated curbstomp and impressive emotional depth with Arturia and Jaune's struggle over the latter's desire to be huntsman clashing with the former's negative experience as a hero. The story would continue to craft its own unique tone as the slow reveal of Kirei and Gilgamesh's machinations would eventually explode the plot into a roller-coaster of excitement with the Fall of Beacon being expanded by the beginning of the Sixth Holy Grail War. Afterwards, more links are revealed between the two canons of the crossover and the author's writing improves by leaps and bounds with the new relationships providing rich character drama to develop.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: The author has admitted to disliking canon Adam and has stated his intentions to try to make the character more interesting, using Gilgamesh to make him, while not heroic, more willing to perform heroic actions if it suits his purposes.
  • The Scrappy: Many fans heavily dislike Weiss Alter, as they find her bland and uninteresting. Not helping matters is her killing fan favorite Qrow.
  • The Woobie: No one has it easy in the story, but Yang especially never seems to catch a break. To wit, her first fight with Kirei lands her in a coma, after which she trains hard to join her friends in saving the world only for Kirei to come for the Origin Rounds Summer stored at the house and shoot her dad with one. After barely surviving that, she finally meets Raven, who seems to be perfectly fine with letting Taiyang die. She is so depressed and convinced that she is just a burden to everyone she loves, only moving forward after Iskandar picks her up, leading her to join up with Ruby and Blake at a crucial moment only to learn Weiss has been corrupted by Salem and Ruby has become far more pragmatic from the war, willing to let their father die to save the world. Then, just when they think they have a workaround for that issue, it gets yanked away from them when Archer dies. At the same time, she nearly gets her mind melted by the Relic of Knowledge while learning that Raven does care about her and that Ruby is Ea. She is once more riddled with indecision, blaming herself for recent events and terrified of making things worse. Oh, and when she finally gets the courage to tell her sister the truth, her mother gets decapitated right in front of her. It doesn't stop even after Salem is defeated. While Team RWBY finally reunites, Ruby had had to sacrifice herself, which no one took well. It doesn't stop there. The good guys need to fight it out for the grail. Yang is confident she can rely on Blake to help keep the situation under control. Only for Blake to immediately cut off the arm she lost in canon, so Lancer doesn't have to fight Rider and they can win the grail without having to kill anyone. And then, when Blake realizes the Grail needs a method to carry out her wish, she falls apart and passes her wish to Yang but at that point it's too little too late. Yang nearly burned her alive for this, but is thankfully talked out of it by Gilgamesh of all people. Years later, Yang is still understandably pissed at Blake for backstabbing her, even after what they've been through and all she's suffered. Girl needs a hug.
