  • Award Snub:
    • It was nominated for four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published); it won none of them.
    • Many also think that John Turturro should've been nominated either alongside or in place of Paul Scofield.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: "What the hell's Egregious?"
  • Jerkass Woobie: Stempel. You do feel bad for him for the way he was treated by Enright, but he's not an especially likable guy by any stretch of the imagination. Rather than wanting to see justice being done, his actions towards the end seem greatly like schadenfreude, particularly when he fights his way to see Van Doren at the stand.
    • Subverted immediately afterwards when he witnesses Van Doren’s public humiliation and clearly feels sorry for him, even to refusing to be photographed with him so as to underline Van Doren’s fall: “Christ, look at the guy.”
  • Love to Hate: The executives involved with the scandals are Smug Snakes of the highest caliber, which really makes the audience hope they get their comeuppance. Of course, they don't.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Martin Scorsese as Geritol CEO Martin Rittenhome. He only shows up in two scenes, but he manages to be a memorable villain through his smugness and vaguely menacing attitude.
