• Broken Base: Whether everything after the 6th Volume is necessary or good. Even Shinohara admitted that she originally planned to stop Purple Eyes with only six volumes, but then her editors asked her to add more to the story and get more out of it, so Mai became the protagonist.
• Complete Monster: Kaoruko Sonehara is a biology teacher who is dead-set on researching Rinko Ozaki's bestial transformation. Sonehara has tried to get Rinko raped by thugs; sicced her hungry dogs on Rinko's younger sister Maiko, killing her; physically and mentally tortured Rinko on multiple occasions; and nearly drowned her newborn to lure her out, who she also intended to raise like a lab rat. Sonehara has also murdered her accomplice and unfortunate witnesses for being an inconvenience. Even 15 years later, despite having Rinko brainwashed and at her mercy, Sonehara's focus is set on her daughter Mai, with the next pursuit being accompanied by more deaths, including Rinko and Shinya's, ending with her blowing up a public TV station to prevent Mai's escape before being finally killed off.
• Moral Event Horizon
  • Some say that Odagiri completely crosses it, after he drugs Rinko and has sex with her unconscious body. The fact that he gives his life to keep Rinko free didn't appease them.
  • It's hard to say exactly when Sonehara crossed it, as she commited a ton of horrible things during the course of the manga. But the fact that she used the newborn Mai, whom she had locked into a small animal carrier, to force Rinko to show herself by holding the carrier and Mai underwater and letting her drown is counted as one of the worst things she has done.
• Retroactive Recognition: In the TV drama, one student was played by Nana Mizuki before she became big as a voice actress.
• The Woobie: After Rinko transforms for the first time, her life goes to hell. Sonehara is constantly on her tail and has killed her sister right in front of her. She can't tell anything to the police because she did kill people as well and the rest of the world may act just like Sonehara. Rinko can't help but feel guilt for people she's killed when she loses control. Mitsugu Odagiri, under pretenses to help her, ends up raping her. Failing to end her life, she gives birth to the daughter who quickly gets kidnapped by Sonehara. Defeating Sonehara only postpones her plans for 15 years, and Rinko ends up brainwashed to attack her own daughter. Soon after Rinko is rescued, Shinya is shot to death without getting to see her, and Rinko chooses to join him while letting Mai and Akio escape the burning building.
