YMMV / PriPara

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: Some people were shipping Yui and Shogo from Idol Time from their first announcement. Then episode 141 revealed that he's her Jerkass of a brother. The ship isn't totally torpedoed though; along with both of them constantly fighting, they simply just turn him into a Tsundere siscon.
  • Accidental Nightmare Fuel: You're young and innocent, growing and hardworking. You've helped your odd but good-natured rival come out of her shell, and the two of you are finally openly acknowledging that you're good friends now. Wham! Right before she (say, Falulu) can finish, she goes *thud* and is lying at your (say, Laala's) feet and may as well be full-on dead, as she seems to have no intention to come to. What a twist. And you're the only one responsible.
    • Also Yui's colored eyes and Meganee being a Perpetual Smiler in literally all situations are considered creepy by some viewers.
  • Adorkable: Mirei loves to collect things that resemble Kuma.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: In the 95th episode, Mirei shows some moms at a playground a "Mama Ticket" she made. Most viewers outside of Japan assume that it's just a mother-themed PriTicket, but it's actually a spoof of mama cards.
  • Americans Hate Tingle: Ajimi is fairly liked by Japanese fans, but to quite a few western fans she's The Scrappy.
    • Dorothy, while one of the most popular characters amongst older fans of the show in Japan, is also this to western fans of the franchise for being The Ditz.
  • Angel/Devil Shipping: Mikan and Aroma.
  • Awesome Music:
    • "TRIal Heart" from the fourth movie won over a lot of fans, for using Mirei's vocals very creatively and having a compelling melody.
    • The WIT-H boys's debut song, "Gira Galactic Tightrope", won over a lot of fans for its catchy electronic beats.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Reona, when it is revealed that he is a boy. Applies mostly in the Japanese fandom though (which caused a stir in 2ch), as the western fandom was merely surprised with it (and made Reona an Ensemble Dark Horse to some).
    • Falulu, particularly after she wins the Paradise Coord. She does so by copying SoLaMi Smile and Dressing Pafe's Making Dramas and before that, she was copying everyone else's catchphrases. And there are some who just find her character design ugly and overdone.
    • Hibiki, fans either love her for her personality and ideals or hate her for the same reason. And then there's the whole Unsettling Gender-Reveal thing.
    • WITH can pretty much already be considered this for some, even before they had been properly debuted. Just like the M4 of Aikatsu Stars!, their importance in the plot is sometimes called into question and their status as male idols is a hot button topic. But after their first appearances they quickly won over quite a few fans, for having interesting personalities, having decent writing free of shipping drama, and getting a very catchy song and CG performance in relatively short time. They even landed a whole concert to themselves, a feat unrivaled by other side characters in the series.
      • Only one episode into Idol Time and Shogo already became hated by a few people for his behaviour towards Yui.
  • Bizarro Episode: Episode 56 mostly goes against the typical flow of the series. Celebrity 4, a group of sexy, adult idols look incredibly out of place among the cuter character designs. They end up chasing the other characters in a weird pedal-controlled car through a forest and eventually force them to scale a cliff and essentially fight for their lives over a river that leads into a waterfall (which is apparently connected to the fountain at the heart of PriPara). All this in some alternate dimension designed to let girls sing and dance. Essentially, the entire point of this weird sequence of events seemed to have been to create an excuse for Mirei and Sophy to allow Laala to form a team with Dressing Pafe and Fuwari in order to participate in the Summer Grand Pri event.
  • Broken Base: People are either excited or unhappy about Idol Time, the fact that a boy band is being introduced doesn't help, especially considering how that fared for Aikatsu Stars!.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience:
    • Ajimi shows some signs of being autistic and having ADHD as she acts way too immature for her age, has an obsession (hyperfixation?) with art (and fruits in the past), a lot of Verbal Tics and other traits.
    • Toriko's tendency to panic over even the littlest things imply that she might have Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Kuma and Usagi. They’re lifelong rivals, the only recurring male duo there is, they bicker all day and night Like an Old Married Couple yet have rare moments of caring, they’re both attracted by Neko and see each other as love rival (on top of their current rivalry). That’s enough material for a Ho Yay couple, even if they’re literally stuffed animal.
    • As of Idol Time, Yui and Shogo.
    • There's a growing number of fanarts pairing Amari and Mario from Idol Land together, even before the latter's debut, one could blame the third official poster of the anime for that.
  • Fashion-Victim Villain: Gloria. A gigantic drill hair, a vacuum gun with a name, a purple royal/regal dress, and an old yet slender figure can really make you one.
  • Follow the Leader: The arcade game copied a few elements from Aikatsu, namely the player character and usage of brands. Ironically, Aikatsu itself followed Pretty Rhythm at first.
    • Many fans see Idol Time PriPara's male idol group WIT-H as this, seeing that PriPara's parent series had overwhelming success with their male idols (and the King of Prism spinoff movies) and think that they're going to try and replicate their luck. Some had even called the group "KING OF PRIPARA'' preemptively.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Many fans of the show get along quite well with fans of Aikatsu!, Pretty Cure and The Loud House.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The series is huge in South Korea, with merchandise sold everywhere and the anime getting higher ratings than it did in Japan. And while Dorothy is the most popular character in Japan, Aroma is the most popular character in South Korea, when she debuted on the arcade game in the country, very long lines that lasted hours long were formed to play the game, which lead to fights among fans, which went on for weeks after the update.
  • Ho Yay: In the Idol Time 3DS game, the WIT-H boys can play escort to any performing idol. As they're also playable, this extends to each other as well.
  • I Knew It!: Fans have guessed multiple things about the franchise that were later confirmed to be true in the anime:
    • This blog post gives us some observations made by fans about Reona actually being male. The same post also mentions that the user herself thinks that Falulu could be a robot, which was confirmed to be true sometime later in the anime.
    • Many fans also predicted that despite Hibiki dressing like a boy, she was really a girl when the character was first shown in the anime.
    • Due to the last three letters of the three group members' names, the bangs of the group's leader, The Stinger of the Everyone's Desire! Let's Go PriParis film showing that the person telling Laala to go to PriPara immediately to see the group, one of the members saying a catchphrase that the character said in an early episode, a performance by one of it's members being shown from a taped recording on a television rather than being shown "live" like the other two idol's performances, all the members having the same brand and a light lavender streak in their hair, many people thought that the new idol group in Season 3, Triangle, was entirely controlled by Non Manaka.
    • Many people also predicted that due to their similar looks, Jewlulu and Jewlie were the same person.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships:
    • Hibiki. In the anime alone, she attempted to seduce Fuwari, Sion, and Sophy. While on a deeper level she also connected to both Falulu and Reona and genuinely seems to like them. In season 3 she is shown connecting to Chili, a fellow celeb-type Idol.
      • In the manga she was shown kissing Laala's hand and flustered her.
      • In fanon, Hibiki X Dorothy is also considered due to their interactions in the series.
      • Ajimi status as a Stalker without a Crush to her also made some people ship them.
    • In comparison to his sister, Reona has several relationships that put him in this position. He is implied to have a crush on Meganii, has a close bond with Sophy, admires Sion (who in turn has said that she finds him attractive), and worked as the love interest to Hibiki in a film. Pepper also gains an immediate crush on Reona upon their first meeting.
    • Mirei is also often shipped with Sion or Laala. Also she used to blush sometimes around Sophy and also Amamiya and Amiya have a crush on her.
    • Laala also is often shipped with Mirei, Falulu, Sophy, Yui, Nao and Shogo.
  • Les Yay: Laala and Mirei, Laala and Falulu, Aroma and Mikan, Mirei and Sion, Hibiki and Falulu, Hibiki and Fuwari, Sophy and Reona, Laala and Yui, Garara and Shuka, Ajimi and Cosmo, Laala and Sophy...
  • LGBT Fanbase: Mostly due to characters like Reona and Hibiki. Also due to having a large female cast it have a lot of Les Yay betwen the characters.
  • Platonic Writing, Romantic Reading: Fans have taken notice of the gesture between Yui and Shougo when performing a "Super Idol Time" together. At one point Shougo got on his knee and kisses Yui on the hand with a heart forming around it.
  • Seasonal Rot: Season 3 can be considered this, and some feared the same would happen with Idol Time.
  • Spiritual Successor: Both the arcade game and anime are this to Pretty Rhythm.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Non (temporarily) disbanding NonSugar.
Non: That does it. I give in. And I give up on us becoming Divine Idols, too. NONSUGAR IS NO MORE!
    • NonSugar crying over their loss.
  • Trans Audience Interpretation:
    • A lot of fans hold the theory that Reona is a trans girl or nonbinary, despite the show never confirming it there is actually a lot of things that imply this.
      • Given how one can potentially change their appearance in the PriPara universe, how some of Dressing Pafe's outfits consist of short shorts, and how idols in PriPara are pretty much entirely female with almost no exception, some people believe that Reona might actually change genders to accommodate for the rules within PriPara.
    • Love is often read as a trans woman, as she has "masculine traits" and insecurities with not being feminine enough to go to Pripara, but once she goes she understood that she can still be cute and feminine the way she is.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Much like Aikatsu!, many characters suffer from this, with Idol Time being the worst offender. Not only did Mimiko never get a CG performance, but Shogo is the only WIT-H member to actually get attention as a character. The only things we know about Asahi and Koyoi are that the former is more hyperactive, the latter is more calm, and that they were Childhood Friends.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Whenever anyone mentioned the opinion that boys couldn't/shouldn't get tickets, Reona looked very uncomfortable with that opinion the first few times. Later on in the series the sentiment and all the implications that follow isn't brought up or elaborated. That being said, in Idol Time a Pripara for boys (Danpri) got introduced, but there is no explanation why there is no Danpri in Parajuku.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley:
    • Some think Falulu became creepier looking when she became a "real girl" as her eyes still manage to look quite dead and unexpressive..
    • Gaaruru's 3D model has a cartoony face that doesn't mesh well with her relatively realistic body.
  • Viewer Name Confusion: Almost all characters. All character spellings you see here are taken from official sources, mainly merchandise. The fansubs would use other romanizations, some of which aren't really consistent. The English pilot dub would use the fansub romanizations, while the official Idol Time subs on Crunchyroll used a mixed bag of both. Sometimes, in the show itself you can see spellings for characters that don't match with the ones on the merchandise.
    • Laala is the official translation for her name, but some fans decide to stick with "Lala". Also in the sixth ending her name was spelled "Rara", it doesn't help that the japanese pronunciation is actually "Rara".
    • Mirei's name is commonly miswritten as "Mireille" in some fansubs.
    • Sophy is the official translation for her name, but many refer to her as "Sophie". In addition, there's a part in episode 20 that spells her name as "Sofi".
    • Sion is the official translation for her name, but fans tend to spell it as "Shion" thanks to the fansubs. It doesn't help that the japanese pronunciation is actually "Shion".
    • Reona is the official translation for his name, but thanks to the fansubs is often referred to fans as "Leona".
    • Faruru or Falulu, it's officially "Falulu" though. It doesn't help that the japanese pronunciation is actually "Faruru".
      • Also due to a typo and fan misinterpretations her surname is often written as "Bokerdole" and she's called "Falulu Bokerdole" or "Faruru Bokerdole", but she doesn't have a surname at all.
    • Aroma is the official translation for her name, but thanks to the fansubs is sometimes spelled as "Aloma".
    • Sometimes Ajimi's surname is miswritten as "Kigi".
    • Galulu, Garuru or Gaaruru, the latter is the official romanization.
      • Like Falulu for the same reason her surname is often written as "Bokerdole ", but she doesn't have a surname at all.
    • Chili is the official translation for her name, but fans tend to spell it as "Chiri" thanks to the fansubs. It doesn't help that the japanese pronunciation is actually "Chiri".
    • Jewlie or Juri.
    • Jewlulu, Jururu or Jululu.
    • Janis or Janice.
    • Michiru's surname is written as either Koda or Kouda note . Also applies to her alter ego Miichiru, which is written in katakana rather than hiragana.
    • Western fans have a tendency to skip one of the I's in "Nijiiro"'s double I.
    • Shuuka or Shuka
    • Farara or Falala, it's officially "Falala" though. It doesn't help that the japanese pronunciation is actually "Farara".
    • Garara is the official translation for her name, but fans tend to spell it as "Galala" thanks to the fansubs
    • According to the 2nd volume of the Pri Para & Idol Time Pri Para Animation Setting Materials Collection, her name is officially spelled "Unikon", but the fansubs spell it as "Unicorn"
    • According to the 2nd volume of the Pri Para & Idol Time Pri Para Animation Setting Materials Collection, officially it's "Punikon" but the fansubs spell it as "Punicorn".
    • Pololo or Pororo.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Not surprising since this is a successor to the Pretty Rhythm series. Its CGI is often compared to that of Aikatsu!.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: It may be an idol show aimed at children, but it has a satanic girl who uses magic to control others into acting bad and says "hell" Once per Episode, mascots who drink alcohol occasionally (and one of them runs what appears to be a bar), a few sequences with the girls in revealing swimsuits, an adult woman going nuts over Michaelangelo's David statue while at a museum, two crossdressing characters, a baby giving three girls a golden shower, a girl who wants to commit suicide in order to get a dress, an elementary schooler who likes seeing boys wet their beds and a train that yells "Go to hell!" in the first movie.
  • The Woobie:
    • Sophy. Whenever she entered Fancy Mode, she turned into a shaggy-haired figure that could only crawl around and state simple phrases until she got a bite of pickled plums, with this dependency tying her to an abusive manager, with her older sister and fan club unable to do anything about it until they all saw Sophy perform a failed Making Drama that echoed her feelings about her upcoming team assignment. Thankfully, they managed to get her to the right team...
    • Fuwari. Not only was she told off by the person who she thought loved her, but she found out Hibiki was Kaitou Genius and a female and faints by shock, almost ending her crush and sending her to leave for home. Thankfully she is pulled out of it and manages to help turn things around. And she becomes good friends with Hibiki again.
    • Hibiki in the past was very popular and had a lot of friends, turns out they were only her friends because of her money and got away when her parents got into an accident, when turns out nothing serious happened they came back as noting have happened, so she stopped beliving in friendship.
    • Non Manaka in episode 123. She had to put up with Chili and Pepper's antics, and she got splashed with coconut water so badly that she (temporarily) disbands NonSugar and gets kidnapped by Ajimi. It's really sad. However, she did manage to win a tennis game against the Ookanda twins!
    • Episode 171 reveals Garara's Dark and Troubled Past note : Due to Falala being responsible for Paparajuku's Pripara during the day and Garara similarly during the night, the latter was completely lonely (with the exception being Pakku) and unable to perform lives and make friends just as her sister did.
