YMMV / Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The film is a parody of musician documentaries like (as the title implies) Creator/Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. However, the genre it was satirizing hasn't seen a big hit since the aforementioned film, making the subject matter irrelevant among general audiences. This likely explains why the film did poorly enough to be pulled out of theaters after only three weeks despite positive reviews.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In the limo, tons of fangirls are crowded around the window, flashing their rears and boobs before a guy comes up with his dick out. Connor signs it.
    • "Finest Girl", aka the Bin Laden song.
  • Genius Bonus: The Deleted Scene song "Mona Lisa" contains the lyric "and a smile like you're hiding a dick." On the surface, this is just another line indicating that Conner thinks the subject of the Mona Lisa is ugly. But this is actually a reference to the (debunked) theory that the model for the portrait was actually a man in drag.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The joke of Zippy flatlining as a hobby predates the remake of the obscure movie being referenced by exactly a year.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Connor. On the one hand, he is extremely insensitive, self-absorbed, and unapologetic about taking all the credit for his music. On the other hand, as his celebrity life collapses, he really doesn't know how to handle anything and doesn't seem to realize that he's pushing away the only people he cares about.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Chris Redd, who plays Hunter, is a rare case of someone going from a SNL veteran's pet project to Saturday Night Live itself.
  • Sampled Up: The hook for "I'm So Humble" samples the obscure doo-wop song "Heartaches" by The Marcels.
  • Special Effects Failure: The home movie footage of infant Connor's drum solo is clearly just an adult with a baby's head superimposed over it.
  • Spiritual Successor: The movie can be seen as a 21st century pop update of This is Spın̈al Tap.
  • Tear Jerker: The death of Maximus. As goofy as it is, poor Conner is genuinely crushed when his beloved turtle dies. Connor crying through Auto-Tune on the soundtrack version wavers between ridiculous and actually sad.
  • Trailer Joke Decay: A lot of the best ones get hit with this, such as Seal's wolf attack, Adam Levine's holograms, Owen's DJ head, and arguably the footage of Connor playing drums as an infant. It doesn't help that they were basically displayed in their entirety before the movie's release.
  • The Woobie:
    • Owen the whole time. Nobody gives him a chance and he's constantly side-lined by Connor.
    • Conner's chef Tyrus. He clearly is a talented singer (considering who portrays him, that's pretty much a given) , but Conner and his entourage don't care. Look how full of glee he is in a talking head after the Style Boyz feature him in Incredible Thoughts.
