- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In the original film, there's a small bipedal reptilian creature that resembles a pocket-sized Gillman with a long tail in the lab building, realized through pretty good stop-motion animation. Neither of the heroes notice it, Dr. Hoak never mentions it, and it disappears completely from the film when it runs off-screen after Hoak first appears.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: To distract a guard, Maggie shouts "Look, up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!" and then flashes her breasts. The Christopher Reeve movie came out four months later.
- Narm: The piranhas sound like gobbling turkeys whenever we see them munching on someone.
- Tearjerker:
- When Paul and Maggie arrive at the summer camp after the piranha attack, a badly-bitten Dumont is shown laying next to the blanket-covered dead body of a child who did not survive, clearly despondent.
- Betsy's death during the said piranha attack can also be sad to some.
- Near the end of the film, Paul enters a catatonic state after polluting the water to kill the piranhas, as his daughter Suzie watches with tears as Maggie tries to give him water.
