YMMV / Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: When the aliens' spaceship achieves warpspeed 2, the entire movie goes back to a storyboard session a la The Amazing World of Gumball episode "The Money" complete with a cameo with the two show's creators discussing the scene. When everything clears up, Ferb probably says it best:
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Super Super Big Doctor is the Big Bad. Not only does she have a design that screams evil, she also refuses to tell Candace what her purpose as The Chosen One is (just that it won't be a Human Sacrifice). Not to mention, if you've watched any movie from the past decade, the "seemingly friendly new character who completely gets the main character is actually the villain" twist is pretty much a Dead Horse Trope.
  • Catharsis Factor:
  • Contested Sequel: To Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension. While it is generally agreed to be a good movie, with some even going as far as to say it's an Even Better Sequel for addressing some of the last movie's complaints (Such as Phineas being less of a jerk and more of the cast getting a spotlight put on them) and for its emotional beats and focus on Candace and her relationship with the titular brothers, some fans feel it pales in comparsion to Across The 2nd Dimension, with some complaining that it lacks the cinematic scope of the last film, feeling more like an extended episode of the show than a proper movie. That said, there are some who Take a Third Option and feel they're both equally good movies for different reasons.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Throat-Lobster, the Large Ham talk show host voiced by Thomas Sanders.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Gained one with fans of Infinity Train since this movie came out just after the finale of Book 3, which the Infinity Train fans really needed as a pick-me-up considering what happened there.
  • Genius Bonus: Isabella says the fortress is three "klicks" away, leading Doof to ask what a "klick" is. "Klick" is short for "kilometer". For those not on the metric system, 3 km is equal to 1.86 miles.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: While she was never fully hated and was more of a Base-Breaking Character, several people who hate Candace will admit that they warmed up to her more in this movie, as her motivations are more fleshed out over the course of the movie, making her obsession with busting her brothers less annoying and childish and more relatable and sympathetic.
  • Salvaged Story:
    • A common complaint about Isabella during the show's run was that her whole life seemed to revolve around Phineas. In the movie, she gets no Ship Tease with him (although it's implied there was some in the Cut Song "Step Into The Great Unknown"), letting her shine with her own personality and skills rather than just pining after Phineas.
    • Stacy and Jeremy showing up as well as singing in the final song has been seen as an apology for them not being in the series finale.
  • They Really Can Act:
    • Ashley Tisdale really sells the exhaustion Candace experiences from having failed to bust her brothers all summer long, and also the scene where she has a break down for always trying to ruin her brothers' fun by getting them in trouble.
    • Vincent Martella does a fantastic job selling Phineas's heartbreak when Candace tells him that she isn't leaving and doesn't want the gift he made or him and Ferb around.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Jeremy and Stacy don't help the boys out at all, despite having just as big a stake to save Candace as the boys, with her being Jeremy's girlfriend (possibly, depending on when the episode takes place) and Stacy's best friend. They don't even help the kids fend off the aliens at the end.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The film appears to set up a Buddy Picture story with Candace and Vanessa early on when they were abducted into the spaceship, with Vanessa acting as a coolheaded and focused straight man to contrast with Candace's hot-headed, easily distracted and obsessive personality, which could have been a lot of fun and provide many interactions between the two girls, especially since Candace and Vanessa didn't interact a lot in the show proper. However they quickly split up, with Vanessa escaping via escape pod and Candace being unintentionally left behind and the two sadly never interact again afterwards bar a brief interaction in one of the last scenes of the film.
  • Woobie Species: Phineas and Ferb encounter a species of cowards called the Cowards living in a hidden city called Cowardalia on the planet Feebla-Oot, with the rest of the Cowards are a Slave Race being mind-controlled. It's hard not to feel bad for them. Thankfully, they do get long end of the stick at the end.
