The play:

  • Tear Jerker: Harold's death. Not only because he's such a likable character, but because Treat and Phillip have lost the closest thing to a father they've ever had in their lives.
  • The Woobie:
    • Phillip lost his parents at a very young age (his father left, his mother died), and has lived his whole life as a Shut In in an abandoned house with only his often violent older brother as his sole contact. In the process, he never managed to learn even the most basic life skills.
    • Jerkass Woobie - Phillip's older brother Treat had a similarly unfortunate background, but is far less sympathetic because of the way he bullies Phillip and makes a living through theft. On the other hand, much of his controlling behavior towards Phillip is from his fear of being abandoned and losing the only family he has left.

The novel:

  • Fridge Brilliance: Also going along with Fridge Horror, but at one point in Butterfly, Celine's brother offered to take Janet on a motorcycle ride, with Celine saying absolutely not. While Celine was strict and wouldn't let Janet do anything that wasn't related to ballet, she was actually justified in this case. Don't forget, Celine had lost the use of her legs after a car accident where she forgot to wear her seatbelt, and motorcycling can be even more dangerous than driving much of the time.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: On a roadtrip after escaping the Orphanage of Fear, the girls travel through New York City, where Brooke admires the Empire State Building and the Twin Towers...then thinks to herself that the commuter jets are flying so low, they might crash into the tall buildings. Ouch.
