YMMV / Operation Darkness

  • Cult Classic: The game was panned by critics at release and never achieved mainstream success, but it developed a following years later thanks to its unique alternate history story and gameplay mechanics that were quite intricate when one took the time to learn the ins-and-outs of the game.
  • Event-Obscuring Camera: One major reoccurring criticism of the game is that the camera rarely if ever gives you a good view of the action and frequently gets obscured by objects in the environment.
  • Narm Charm: The game probably wouldn't be as charming if its characters didn't treat the outrageous premise with complete seriousness and dramatic gravitas.
  • Nintendo Hard: Both critics and fans of the game will agree that it is brutal, especially early on. Many of the battlefields are littered with mines that can't be easily viewed from the camera perspectives provided, and complications such as reinforcements often show up at what appear to be the end of long and grueling battles.
  • Vindicated by History: Sort of. It never achieved any form of mainstream success, but it does have a much stronger cult following years later. While the game was utterly panned upon release for its primitive graphics, bad camera, and lack of a proper tutorial, Turn-Based Strategy fans in the present have found value in its deep gameplay mechanics and interesting alternate history story. Hardcore Gaming 101 did a pretty lengthy review in which they argued the game was fundamentally misrepresented when it was released.
