YMMV / Onslaught

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: For many people, Onslaught is better known through his appearance as the end boss in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes.
  • Arc Fatigue: What exactly is the full story of Onslaught? Well, try reading the trades which are roughly two hundred pages a pop. Oh, there are four trades by the way.
  • Audience-Alienating Era: Took place during quite a few, including The Clone Saga (and was the reason for the final delay for the end of it), the aftermath of The Crossing, noseless and bone-claw Wolverine, and had some of Joseph's earliest appearances. While it mercy-killed the stuff caused by The Crossing, it also led into Heroes Reborn, but between this, Heroes Reborn, and Heroes Return, a lot of what happened in The Crossing was undone.
  • Fan Nickname: Onslaught's evolved form is sometimes affectionately (or not so affectionately) called "Crab Onslaught" by fans, especially in the toy collecting community.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • When Bishop apologizes to Gambit for mistakingly believing him to be a traitor.
    • Quicksilver protecting The Vision during the final battle, even though both men hate one another.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Scarlet Witch's status as the only mutant able to sacrifice herself to Onslaught, explained here with the Ass Pull that her hex somehow protected her, makes more sense after the later, controversial retcon that she and her brother were never mutants at all.
  • Hollywood Hype Machine: Or Marvel Hype Machine, in this instance. Only fans who were reading comics at the time this crossover was released will remember just how hard Marvel worked to make Onslaught happen. A slight taste can be gleaned from checking out covers from Marvel comics released during the time period, at least half if not more of which will obnoxiously plug a "SPECIAL ONSLAUGHT UPDATE INSIDE". Unsurprisingly, this has led to quite the Hype Backlash among the older and crustier segment of the Marvel Comics fandom where Onslaught is concerned.
  • It Was His Sled: Onslaught is a split personality of Professor Xavier's and was created when he attacked Magneto following the latter ripping out the Adamantium from Wolverine in Fatal Attractions (Marvel Comics).
  • Moment of Awesome: Marvel Universe: Onslaught was pretty damn epic.
  • Older Than They Think: Onslaught's famous "BEHOLD MY MIGHTY HAND!" line was actually recycled from the Blood Ties crossover, where it was first spoken by Blood Ties Big Bad Exodus.
  • The Scrappy: The titular Big Bad Onslaught is infamous in X-Men fan circles as one of the most blatant Executive Meddling-enforced villains ever, and among some fans the ire over him and this crossover (and specifically how hard editorial pushed it back in the day) edges on Hatedom levels. Jeanne of the classic Marvel baddie fansite Bring on the Bad Guys went on a pretty epic rant about the character on his begrudgingly-posted character page. Old-school comic review site the X-Axis also disliked the character and castigated him in their reviews. He was Rescued from the Scrappy Heap to a degree by his use in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, though.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: A villain born out Xavier's and Magneto's mentality sounds like he could have been an interesting character, but swift Motive Decay made him a Generic Doomsday Villain.
