Fanfic

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Clark ends up involved with Gisele, who is portrayed by Gal Gadot, the fic written years before Gadot would be cast as Wonder Woman.

Literature

  • Adorkable: Aiden may mostly be a serious Action Survivor and Kid Detective, but he gets the occasional moment (his discomfort about riding a horse, his memorizing of his dad's cheesy Hard Boiled Detective novels, a Noodle Incident about him needing to sort his Halloween candy alphabetically, etc.) that is simultaneously silly and adorable.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • How guilty is Freddy Reyes of failing to protect his brother Miguel from their abusive stepfather? His dialogue implies that he barely knew the stepfather, and a comment about him being on parole indicates that he was in prison and/or living outside of the family home (especially since Miguel met his wife or girlfriend at some point before being arrested) for at least some of the time Miguel was being abused. Given how his brother’s inept lawyer never used the abuse as a manslaughter defense, Freddy may never have known for sure what happened between his brother and stepfather until Aiden tells him off for not protecting Miguel.
    • In Hunting the Hunter, it is mentioned that Frank's Engineered Public Confession was captured by microphones that Shady Real Estate Agent Holyfield planted on the Turnbull Farm to spy on the residents. What isn’t mentioned is whether Holyfield voluntarily turned over the recording out of a sense of Everyone Has Standards unwillingness to let the Falconers stay in prison, or if the surveillance was only discovered during an inspection of the crime scene or interview of his employee Mike Delaney (who Frank knocked unconscious nearby).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Lovable curmudgeon farmer Zephriam Turnbull and the Lovable Rogue street gang known as the International Crew are popular and colorful enough to make larger impressions than some of the recurring cast despite only being in one book each (Hunting the Hunter and Now You See Them Now You Don't, respectively).
  • Jerkass Woobie: Miguel. Mean, nasty bully who makes Aiden's life in the juvenile farm camp a living hell (along with the other inmates), but it turns out his stepfather was abusive (before Miguel accidentally killed him and got charged with manslaughter), his brother didn't do anything to help stick up for Miguel, and not only that, he won't let Miguel live with him after he escapes juvie and tells him he's not welcome at home. To top it all off he ends up getting caught again and sent to a maximum security prison.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: In the Kidnapped trilogy, Aiden struggles to reconnect with his old best friend Richie, feeling he lacks the perspective to understand what Aiden went through and finds something about it awkward enough to avoid Aiden. After Meg is kidnapped, Richie comes over to lend his sympathy and help, but barely does anything beyond that, besides giving Aiden a Ditch the Bodyguards disguise, when he could have provided some additional help and had more scenes exploring and repairing his friendship with Aiden.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Throughout the series, the siblings steal things and cause damage to some property to survive on the run and often wonder about how they will make it up to specific people and whether it is unrealistic to expect they will be able to invoke Wrongful Accusation Insurance. Nonetheless, the sixth book ends with a simple comment that all charges against them have been dropped without a word about how that was done or what, if anything, was done to compensate or appease the people Meg and Aiden had to rob.
