YMMV / Nymeria's War

Go To

  • Adorkable: Emmett Allyrion is slightly mentally challenged and a lot of his actions come off as awkward as a result, yet he is a lovable guy, who is shown to treat others with kindness, even his cousin Emerson, who is a threat to his title as the heir to Godsgrace.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Aisha a Manipulative Bitch, who deliberately tricks Gwendis into becoming a follower of her Religion of Evil, or is she Obliviously Evil and a Well-Intentioned Extremist, who genuinely believes in the moral rightfulness of her actions and fails to see just how much damage she causes by doing the bidding of the Great Other?
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Donovar Toland is built up as a major enemy and threat to Nymeria in the early stages of her war. He is killed off at the end of the first chapter, after his men have merely engaged in a couple of skirmishes against the Martell troops.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Aisha, the Dark Priestess has just barely enough supporters to avoid being a fullblown Scrappy. Despite being generally seen as a rather interesting character, she is mostly loathed due to the threat she poses towards Ensemble Dark Horse Gwendis, her manipulative and overly secretive behaviour and the fact that she serves a God of Evil while being incredibly hypocritical about it generally draws the ire of some readers. Others like her for exactly her mysterious and arguably unique role in the story and are intrigued by her more than they are concerned.
  • Evil Is Cool: Efran Sand is by far not the hated character he should be due to his monstrous actions, mostly due to him being seen as interesting and entertaining, with his unique looks and entertaining personality, as well as his role in the storyline, all of which firmly put him into this direction.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Out of the large cast of characters, quite a few manage to gather a lot of fans:
    • The titular character herself, Princess Nymeria Martell, is unsurprisingly also one of the characters that most readers root for. Unlike the other kings in Dorne, who are all shades of grey and black, Nymeria is not only a competent and caring ruler, but also ambitious and determined to give her people a new home in Dorne. The fact that she is also canonically confirmed to end up as the victor in the Dorne conflict makes it even more easy to root for her success.
    • Gwendis Blackmont, daughter of Benedict Blackmont, is one of the Point-of-Views who is generally among the most well-liked, with her being easy to root for, a well-intentioned and caring chancellor for her kingdom, as well as in a unique position due to her being an ambitious woman who tries and even temporarily succeeds to be in a position of power in the Andal-dominated Dorne. Her interesting storyline alongside Aisha and the Great Other does the rest.
    • Another character that qualifies is Jamison Dayne. Being one of the most morally grey Point-of-Views, but still a Jerk with a Heart of Gold is part of his appeal, as is his sarcasm and the fact that all of this makes him an Expy of a fan favourite from the source material, Ser Jaime Lannister. There is also his tragic love story with Isabella Fowler, a major Pet the Dog moment for his character that single-handedly makes him a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • The story itself is often just called NW as an abbreviation.
    • Mordekhai Crusher has gotten the Embarrassing Nickname "Wesley" in the comment section, as a nod towards the infamous Scrappy Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation, mostly due to him being among the (intentionally) least liked characters as a result of his monstrous actions and therefore being ridiculed with this nickname.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Forum of Thrones. Not only do they share a large amount of readers, the authors are also actively reading and participating in each other's story. WildingKing has drawn numerous characters of Forum of Thrones' cast, whereas LiquidChicagoTed has created a majority of Nymeria's War's page on this wiki.
  • I Knew It!: The author does hint at several future plot points early on, allowing readers to discover some of them before they actually happen, which generally leads to this reaction.
    • The death of Donovar Tolan was heavily foreshadowed in Gwendis' vision and therefore it wasn't much of a surprise when he died at the end of his first Point of View.
    • Garrison Fowler's False Flag Operation against the Kingdom of Blackmont, to lure them into his war with House Manwoody, was gradually uncovered by the readers even before being outright revealed.
    • The identity of Mordekhai Crusher as Aisha's warrior was also hinted at, though to a lesser degree than the examples above. He was still generally accepted as the most likely candidate even before the priestess confirmed this speculation.
  • Love to Hate: Albin Manwoody is portrayed as hateable as possible, with just about zero positive traits. At the same time, his Psychopathic Manchild traits make him enjoyable to read about and hating him is almost as fun as hating the source material's prime Caligula, Joffrey Baratheon.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Albin Manwoody and his freaks have crossed it before the story even started, due to their cruel torture of Missy.
    • Mordekhai Crusher's treatment of Shana Sand, a completely innocent girl who was tortured by the freaks for a very weak reason before escaping, already introduces him as a truly horrendous person.
  • No Yay: Albin Manwoody clearly has feelings for Missy. Considering that their interaction has started similarly to the Theon/Ramsay interaction from the source material, this is more than just a little bit disturbing, especially as Missy does give in to his advances due to Stockholm Syndrome.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The Purple Ocelot only appears very briefly in the first chapter of Book 1 before being killed off, but he is remembered fondly due to his swagger, his flamboyant style and extravagant personality.
  • The Scrappy: A downplayed example with Tomas Toland, who is not quite the most important character. Unlike similarly disliked characters, such as Aisha, he doesn't even have the small number of supporters the Dark Priestess manages to muster, due to being an insufferable and cocky Jerkass, who is so loyal to his brother that he is introduced by callously raiding innocent people in his brother's name.
  • Too Cool to Live: As seen above, the Purple Ocelot is one of the most visually unique characters, who is also one of the few characters in Kingsgrave that are portrayed sympathetically and who is a genuine ally to Missy. All of this makes his early demise all the harder.
