• Ensemble Dark Horse: Charles von Hapsburg, Prince of the Asturias, and son of Philip of Spain, has acquired a surprising fanbase, even though he began as a side character, belonging to the rival Hapsburg dynasty.
• Fan Nickname: Charles (Carlos) von Habsburg, the Prince of Asturias, is popularly known among readers as "Cawwos", ever since he was revealed to have Elmuh Fudd Syndwome. (The author denied that his rhotacism was that strong, but the damage was done.) The nickname is useful for a practical purpose: it distinguishes him from the many other characters in the story who are also named Charles. Now an Ascended Meme, as his younger half-brother the Infante Fernando calls him "Cawwoth."
• Moral Event Horizon: Ivan IV hits these with startling regularity. And then he keeps going.
• One-Scene Wonder: The Jiajing Emperor of China is introduced on his deathbed. As he quickly demonstrates, he's had an interesting reign.
• The Woobie:
  • Poor, overweight, and mentally retarded Prince Fernando of Spain. In the scene that reveals to the general population that something is wrong, he's in tears of guilt after panicking and accidentally killing an exotic lizard.
  • And likewise, his similarly named uncle/cousin, Archduke Ferdinand of Austria is a man who the universe hates. And he knows it.
  • Iron Woobie: Edward Tudor, Duke of York, is a Renaissance era Emo Teen for a reason, but damn if he lets that stop him...
  • Jerkass Woobie: Henri II was held hostage as a child, in conditions that eventually caused the death of his elder brother, and part of his paralysis in the face of critical situations is due to his trauma.
