- Angst? What Angst?: In Heaven and Hell, Madeline doesn't seem very much affected over Orry's death.
- Awesome Music: Bill Conti's glorious sweeping score, which he had to complete in three weeks.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The miniseries was a massive hit in Poland during the 90s. It also indirectly contributed to the similarly disproportionate popularity of Early Edition, in which Kyle Chandler played the lead.
- One-Scene Wonder:
- Johnny Cash (!) gets a scene as renegade abolitionist John Brown.
- Jimmy Stewart appears in the second miniseries as attorney Miles Corbert. ..Alright, technically he gets two scenes, but still.
- Billy Dee Williams as a black rights union leader in part three.
- Questionable Casting: Wayne Newton as a sadistic prison warden. Either the campy voice makes him creepier, or he's impossible to take seriously.
- Retroactive Recognition: Most notably, Jonathan Frakes went on to have a long and fruitful career as an actor and director; North and South also resulted in he and co-star Genie Francis hooking up; the two eventually married in 1988 and have remained married for 30 years as of this writing.
- Squick: During Orry's emotional breakdown after slapping Brett, a drop of mucus leaks from his nose.
