YMMV / My Bride is a Mermaid

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: It's telling that the vast majority of the tropes listed are from the anime, which diverges wildly from the manga, though not in a bad way.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Todd Haberkorn voiced Nagasumi in this series who achieved a flame-enveloped Super Form in the finale powered by his love of Sun to give the villain an epic beatdown. One year later, Todd would go on to voice Natsu Dragneel in Fairy Tail who has a flame-powered Super Form fueled by The Power of Friendship in the form of the Dragon Force and consistently beats up villains in this state as a signature staple of the series. Looking back, in the context of Todd's English Dub career, Nagasumi's 11th-Hour Superpower could be considered foreshadowing for Todd voicing his more famous role of Natsu in Fairy Tail.
  • Ho Yay: Kai and Chimp, the two initially having a bromance before it all but looks like the two are dating, the final chapter even suggesting the two realized they have feelings for each other. Plus Nagasumi's man-crush on Masa.
  • Les Yay: Sun and Lunar, Sun and Akeno, Mawari and Sun & Mawari and Akeno all have moments. And the Class President tends to unwittingly have them with the other girls too, much to her dismay.
  • Moe: In one episode, Lunar's father, Gozaburo, and Masa (on orders) crossdress as schoolgirls and catgirls and act out moe stereotypes in an attempt to understand a girl's heart. It really is that horrible. Ends with Sun suddenly receiving cat ears, which everyone agrees is incredibly moe (before being blasted away).
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The second half of the 2nd OVA, which does a Genre Shift from comedy/action to straight horror, borrowing elements from The Ring. Saturn will probably haunt your nightmares now.
    • That part of the TV series were Sun's family is knocked out by the creeper mermaid noble just because he wanted Sun for his own petty desires is startling for how serious it is. The terror on the Seto clan's faces as the special incense works to knocks them out and Ren cries out for her daughter to run away is sincerely frightening.
  • One True Threesome: Thanks to Nagasumi having an Unwanted Harem that has many of the members get Les Yay with Sun, it's not uncommon to have Nagasumi and Sun be depicted in threesomes with some of the other cast members, most commonly either Lunar or Akeno.
  • Woolseyism: That whole chivalry/mermaid pun is instead rendered as "honor among thieves is honor under the seas" in the English version and thus drowned and made to fishfood. But then again, while "mermaid" and "chivalry" may be similar words in Japanese, they aren't even close in english, so keeping it would have hurt the dub more than helped.
