YMMV / Mulaney

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Jane's musical number in "Halloween" comes out of nowhere.
  • Growing the Beard: Starting as early as the second episode, fans claim it stops being New In Town: The Series
  • Informed Wrongness: As John himself points out in the opening monologue, it's not normal in polite company to talk about sex when eating. Yet he's treated as insensitive for not wanting his girlfriend to talk about a childbirth while they're eating.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Fans of John Mulaney's standup criticized the pilot for relying on material recycled from his standup routines, and that a significant portion of the show was awkwardly setting up jokes they had already heard.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Off-The-Jazzapram-Andre. Only exists for a single (presumably non-canon) stinger, but popular with fans.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: A frequent criticism is its similarity to Seinfeld (a comedian Danza with wacky neighbors, interspersed with standup routines). This comparison gets a wink and nod in "Sweet Jane" when John's Girl of the Week says she defended him against people who said he was ripping off Seinfeld.
  • The Woobie: Andre. No one likes him and he's a bit insufferable, but his desperation to be accepted is sad. Specific mention should be made of the second episode when he just waited in the hallway when they kicked him out... and a few minutes later when they let in someone else, he was still there. The same episode also reveals that at his birth, his mother said she'd never love him. "In the Name of the Mother, and the Son and the Holy Andre" reveals that a lot of his behavior is due to his acne medication, meaning even his personality flaws aren't his fault.
