Trivia / Mulaney

Go To

  • The Danza: John Mulaney as John Mulaney.
  • Development Gag: When Macaulay Culkin backs out of the Christmas production in It's a Wonderful Home Alone, John steps up and says he'll do the part, he'll play Culkin in a blonde wig shot only from the back and they'll pretend it's him. This is exactly what appears to have happened in the three or so frames "Culkin" was visible towards the beginning of the episode. This also happens directly after the Creator In-Joke of Culkin backing out of Celebrity You Guessed It.
  • Recycled Script: The stand up segments use jokes from John Mulaney's New In Town act almost verbatim, and many of the jokes on the show are adaptations of jokes from the act, sometimes awkwardly added to conversation.
  • Screwed by the Network: FOX had a lot of faith in Mulaney at first. It picked up the series after NBC passed on it, then bumped the original episode order up from 6 to 16. Then it aired, and the bad reviews flooded in. The second episode did get better reviews , but the ratings didn't improve. After episode 3 aired, FOX cut the episode order from 16 to 13 and moved the show to a worse time slot, where it was subject to multiple pre-emptions.
  • What Could Have Been: Griffin Newman (who would go on to star in Amazon's update of The Tick and host the Blank Check podcast) was originally cast as Seymour, a roommate of John's in the pilot. After NBC passed on the show and FOX retooled it, the character was written out and Andre Van Horn was cast as a new character, Andre.
  • Write What You Know: John Mulaney, comedian and former writer for the legendary Saturday Night Live, plays John Mulaney, comedian and writer for the legendary Lou Cannon.
