• Badass Decay: Back in the 1990s, Funaki was one of the biggest ring stars in Japan. About ten years later, he was a diminished guest wrestler, but still significantly successful. And ten years later, he is a mid-carder in a promotion which barely fills the Korakuen Hall.
• Broken Base: For some, Funaki is a wildly underrated MMA legend. For others, he is a wildly overrated MMA legend. His actual skills are a matter of debate, worsened by Pancrase's reputation for works and his own irregular performances. Some maintain he was a phenomenal fighter who failed at his most important times only due to injuries and personal troubles, while others argue that he only looked superb in his fights because almost nobody in Pancrase had a good grappling and because he frequently faced no-name opponents in order to protect his ace status.
• Narm: Funaki doing the slash throat sign after finishing Yuki Kondo could have been a severely scary sight, but seeing Masa's crazed facials upon doing the gesture, one cannot help but giggle.
