YMMV / Marvel: Contest of Champions

Go To

  • Broken Base: Many people who played the game started noticing that some of the character animations were strikingly similar to those in Capcom games (a couple examples include Spider-Man's Flurry of Blows copying Chun-Li's Hoyokusen and Luke Cage's Special Attacks in general resembling Cody's Final Destruction). Some fans thought that this was Kabam! and Marvel blatantly plagiarizing Capcom, while others thought of it as simply a harmless Shout-Out to the Marvel vs. Capcom series. There was also a debate on whether or not this would hurt Marvel's relationship with Capcom (though it apparently didn't, if what was announced at PlayStation Experience 2016 is any indication).
  • Heartwarming Moments: The fourth anniversary trailer towards the end with the Surfer's hope soliloquy. He admits that he's traveled untold distances for an untold amount of time and seems to stop and fall over exhausted. Then he awakens and gets back on his board while declaring he is never going to rest until he finds his lost friends and brings them home.
Silver Surfer: And it is for hope that I break the barriers of space and time. It is for hope that I search the four corners of the Battlerealm. It is for hope that I ride. A long time ago, I made a promise to my friends. No matter how long it takes or how far I have to travel... I will fulfill that promise. I will find them and bring them back home. Thus spoke the Silver Surfer. (The Surfer flies into stars, leaving an energy trail in the shape of a four.)
    • Even more touching is this can be seen as a Leaning on the Fourth Wall moment. With so many fans having waited so long to see the Fantastic Four return in virtually everything and the Disney-Fox merger taking place, it's easy to see this as a reflection of the arduous journey Marvel has made to get the very characters that started their Shared Universe back home and for them to say "Your journey is almost over and you will see them again. Where they belong."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The "copying Capcom games" thing noted above. Over a year after people began noticing, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was announced in November of 2016.
  • Moment of Awesome: The fourth anniversary trailer is basically a recap and extended monologue that wouldn't be out of place in the comics with all the gravitas the Surfer should deliver when voiced. And it ends with the Surfer declaring he will not stop until his friends are found and brought home while leaving an energy trail shaped like a very familiar and well known number. "Thus spoke the Silver Surfer".
