YMMV / Mario Super Sluggers

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Namco is up to their usual standard with a stellar soundtrack, but the real showstopper is the credits theme, "We Love Baseball!", a funky party song that uses samples of the various characters' Voice Grunting to make them "rap". The character select screen theme is another example.
  • Contested Sequel: Fans have a difficult time determining whether this game or its predecessor is superior. Those who prefer Superstar Baseball do so for placing more emphasis on skill, more straight forward gameplay with easier control, and lack of Waggle, while those who prefer Sluggers do so for its larger number of characters and stadiums, better balance on player chemistry, and more in-depth story mode that also removes certain convoluted missions from the prior game.
  • Funny Moments: You can hit people with the pitch, and while most of them fall over in pain when hit, Donkey Kong charges the mound. However, the camera cuts away before he can deliver a beatdown on the pitcher.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • King K. Rool. He has a 10/10 Batting score (being one of the only characters to have such a score, only matched by Bowser and Petey Piranha) and an above-average Pitching score of 6, making him a great pitcher for a Power-focused team (and being on-par with some of the other captains). The only true downsides are that K. Rool has close to the lowest Fielding stat and the lowest Running stat in the game... but his poor running speed doesn't matter due to how easy it is to get home runs with him, and a smart player won't put the blatantly obese K. Rool anywhere but the umpire's box or pitching mound when on defense anyways.
    • Toadsworth's pitches are extremely slow, making it quite hard to judge when to hit them. The only thing that makes him even remotely balanced is that he gets tired quickly, but during the rounds he's pitching, it's going to be virtually impossible for anyone to hit the ball.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The "close play" feature. Since the game was released, Major League Baseball instituted two rule changes, both unpopular with fans. In the 2014 season, MLB brought in the Posey rule which prevents catchers from blocking the plate unless they have the ball (violating this rule means the runner scores, even if home plate is never touched). Two seasons later, a rule was added prohibiting takeout slides unless the baserunner makes contact with the bag (the runner is out if this rule is broken; if this happens on a double play attempt, both runners are out).
  • Heartwarming Moments: In the intro after Luigi gets tackled and crashes into the wall, we see just not Daisy and a Red Toad gasp in shock, but even all the spectators in the bleachers look horrified and concerned for Luigi, mostly because of how painfull that must've been for him. And then, When they see that Luigi has the ball the moment he got shoved, EVERYONE, starting with Mario, cheers for him. This shows that Luigi still gets the respect he deserves.
  • Memetic Badass: Apparently, Goombas have Mind over Matter. Naturally, fans ran wild with it.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • In the intro, DK accidentally tackles Luigi, causing him to crash into the wall. Everyone was concerned for him until they see that the ball was in the glove the moment he was shoved, showing that Luigi had unintentionally pulled off a savage play.
    • In the final cinematic, Bowser saves Mario from getting hit by a Bullet Bill launched by Wario and Waluigi by hitting it back at them.
  • Sequel Displacement: Some fans of this game are unaware of its predecessor, Mario Superstar Baseball on the GameCube. Most likely because the Wii was far more successful than the GC.
  • Unexpected Character: No one was expecting this game to be King K. Rool or Tiny Kong's debut in the Mario series. Baby Donkey Kong also makes his debut outside of Yoshi's Island DS, making him the fourth of the Star Children to be playable.
  • Waggle: Oh yes. You can only hit or pitch by swinging the Wii remote, and shaking the Wii remote makes characters who just batted run faster.
