YMMV / Man of Steel (2018)

  • Awesome Art: The miniseries features a group of well-known and talented artists, each of them handling the pencils of one issue.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Looking for the arson, Superman stretches his senses and listens in for any possible clues. He comes across a young woman trying to sing a cover of a popular song to her roommate and Superman ends up eavesdropping much to his shame. He finds the cover to be pretty good and finds all the imperfections like some off-key singing to be really endearing. Superman knows about your aspirations and thinks you're doing good.
  • The Scrappy: Both supporters and detractors of the book seem to agree on Rogol Zaar being the weak point of the book, being viewed as an extremely generic villain who’s derivative of a lot of Clark’s rogues gallery.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Whoo, boy... Bendis' work on Superman, of all people, got fans up in arms. With the only previews being shown being the covers to the six issues to the series, fans quickly went into a panic, fearing that Bendis' first order of the day was to obliterate the Clark/Lois marriage and retcon Jonathan Kent from existencenote , despite the fact that he married Luke Cage and Jessica Jones and gave them a child (who, in one universe, would become Captain America), although he's also fond of annihilating status quos and darker writing (Daredevil, Alias, Infamous Iron Man, Powers). Fans are also scared that Bendis is going to fall back on many of his usual conventions, including his seeming aversion to keeping with actual continuity and characterization, and this would be right after DC straightened out Superman and his history.note  Fans fearful of the fate awaiting Lois and Jon in the mini-series are relying on the fact Doomsday Clock, set a year in advance of all other DC titles, ensures whatever Bendis has planned is only temporary as the Kents are shown to still be together in that series. Indeed, Lois plays a decent role in the story and issue #5 has Lois and Clark mention Jon.
    • As it turned out, Lois and Jon were simply Put on a Bus, Lois choosing to accompany her son on a trip across the galaxy with Jor-El. Bendis also revealed in interviews his plan to reunite the Kents in the pages of Action Comics with a redefined relationship heavily influenced by Mr And Mrs Smith (Bendis has yet to specify whether he meant the 1941 version or the 2005 version).
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Since Action Comics #1000 came out, Rogol Zaar being the one to destroy Krypton and eradicate the Kryptonians has been lambasted on the internet for reusing a twist that has been already used at least half dozen of times since 1958 by stories such like Superboy #67, Action Comics #338, Superman: Earth One and -possibly- Superman: Brainiac.
  • Older Than They Think: A genocidal mass-murdering alien with an irrational grudge against Kryptonians turns up all of sudden, tries to kill Superman and his family and destroys Kandor is essentially the plot from 2008 story arc The Third Kryptonian by Kurt Busiek.
  • Unexpected Character: Of all the characters for Bendis to bring back, It's doubtful that anyone would have expected Jor-El/Mr. Oz to show up and have a pivotal role in the story.
