- Award Snub:
- The film wasn't nominated for Best Picture or Best Director at the Academy Awards.
- "Save Me" losing the Oscar for Best Song to Phil Collins for Tarzan.
- Many cite this film as having the performance of Tom Cruise's career, and would say that he deserved the Oscar over Michael Caine for The Cider House Rules.
- Awesome Music: "Wise Up". Other songs worth of mention are "One", "Save Me" (The closing credits songs) and "Momentum", all of them composed and/or performed by Aimee Mann ("One" was composed by Harry Nilsson). Even the reviewers who dislike the movie tend to praise its soundtrack.
- Draco in Leather Pants: Frank is this within the story.
- Fridge Horror: The suggestion that Jimmy Gator molested his daughter is horrifying. It's even more horrifying when you remember his job involves working directly with children.
- Harsher in Hindsight: Jason Robards' character in the film suffers from terminal brain and lung cancer. Robards coincidentally died of lung cancer a year after the film was released.
- Heartwarming Moments: "I can't let this go. I can't let you go. Now, you... you listen to me now. You're a good person. You're a good and beautiful person and I won't let you walk out on me. And I won't let you say those things - those things about how stupid you are and this and that. I won't stand for that. You want to be with me... then you be with me. You see?"
- He Panned It, Now He Sucks!: Kevin Smith notoriously disliked this movie. In response to the backlash he got, one of the internet trolls in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was named "Magnolia-Fan."
- Protection from Editors: Paul Thomas Anderson got this after the success of Boogie Nights. He made Magnolia, an ambitious project, because he felt he might never get the chance again.
- Retroactive Recognition: Clark Gregg plays one of the crew members on "What Do Kids Know?".
- Signature Line: "Respect the cock and tame the cunt."
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The rather self-centered behavior displayed by many characters in the cast, made it hard for some viewers to sympathize with them.
