YMMV / Mad Monster Party?

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Felix "skipping" over his words at the end. Was he really a robot malfunctioning, or was he just pretending to win over Francesca's love despite her being a robot?
  • Awesome Music:
    • The title song, sung by Ethel Ennis. Also the extremely catchy "Stay One Step Ahead".
    • The film's recurring theme "The Baron" also counts.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • Even for a movie this odd, Francesca and the Monster's Mate suddenly ripping off each other's dresses and having a cat fight in their underwear (complete with yowling sounds) is a very abrupt and dirty joke for a family movie.
    • The musical number "Stay One Step Ahead" has a chorus sung by a group of very strange creatures that appear out of nowhere just for that song. Afterward, they jump into a television set, disappear, and no one speaks of that strange scene again.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The film has gained a bit more recognition in Brazil, even moreso than the Christmas specials created by Rankin/Bass Productions.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Francesca is a robot - and Felix might be, too. Any similarities with the ending of Blade Runner are probably coincidence.
    • Felix is upset about being the chairman of board of Monsters, Incorporated brings up a certain Pixar film.
    • A "classic monster" whom even the other monsters fear, unseen for most of the movie and only known as "It", inevitably brings a certain Stephen King baddie to mind for modern audiences.
    • The prequel of sorts features a group of various monsters getting together in a hotel in Transylvania. Why does that sound familiar...
    • King Kong was renamed "It" due to copyright reasons. Rankin-Bass would later co-produce a King Kong tv series, as well as King Kong Escapes.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Chef Mafia Machiavelli. Also, Felix's boss Mr. Cronkite.
  • Tear Jerker: Although it had to be done to get rid of “It”, Dr. Frankenstein using his formula to destroy the Isle of Evil and everyone on it (barring Felix and Francesca) counts as a big tear jerker.
  • Values Dissonance: It is a bit disquieting to see Francesca fall for Felix, directly after he has slapped her to quell her "hysteria." Within context, he was genuinely trying to help calm her down and apologized before doing it. And many fans think it's meant to hint at the twist: she is a robot... so it's Percussive Maintenance.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Dr. Frankenstein's song to Felix (One Step ahead) could've opened up a character arc for Felix about learning that dumb luck can only get you so far, and you need to take charge.
