YMMV / Lucas the Spider

Go To

  • Aluminium Christmas Trees: Lucas is a vegetarian, quite unusual for a spider. Except he's a jumping spider, some of which really are omnivores or (in the case of one species) herbivores.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Many people were wondering how Lucas would react to finding out that spiders normally eat flies after meeting Bzzt. When told to his face, he doesn't seem to care that much, only being mildly grossed out.
  • Awesome Music: "One-Man Band". Not only is the song very nice to listen to, it also has a pretty cool Callback to "Encore" (with Lucas jamming out on his harp) and “Musical Spider” (the mbira part at the end echoes the lyric, “My name is Lucas/I am a spider”).
  • Dancing Bear: The series is popular less for the content, and more for succeeding in making a realistic spider cute.
  • Growing the Beard: The shorts are cute from their conception, but the introduction of another CGI bug, Bzzt, grants Lucas a foil to talk to and the series' stories to become a little more lively.
  • Sweetness Aversion: The series can be too cute for some, as it mainly involves small children doing cutesy child things with not much conflict. While original 2017-19 shorts pretty much always managed to avert it, the Cartoonito shorts and episodes play it straight.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: You know you've hit this territory when you've got a cartoon spider that even arachnophobes think is adorable.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The moth that was first teased as a pupa in "What is This?" could have made a great mature adult to play off of Lucas and Bzzt's childishness, thus fixing the saccharine problem that some people have with the series. The moth has absolutely zero dialogue in the next episode, and disappears completely in the episode following that.
  • The Woobie: Sometimes Lucas can be this, especially in episodes like "Encore" and "It's Cold Outside". This is definitely a contributing factor to his cuteness.
