• Alternative Character Interpretation:
  • Is Bubba every bit as rotten as his brothers and that's why he hits and pocks on the kids for no reason, or does he take it out on other kids because he's bullied and exploited by his older brothers?
  • When Rev. Alden goes to the Galender place after learning about the incident with Charles (in which he all but blamed Charles) and asks Bubba about his mother, was he still in denial about the Galenders' true colors or was he starting to see what they truly were and just asked Bubba about his mother to confirm their sob story about said mother's disease was indeed yet another lie from the elder brothers?
• Catharsis Factor:
  • Seeing Laura and Mary, along with the other schoolkids overpower Bubba after weeks of being bullied and abused by him is extremely satisfying.
  • Likewise, seeing Charles beating up Sam by wrestling him to the ground and punching him in the face over and over after he and George harrassed Caroline. And of course, Rev. Alden denouncing them at the church overpowering Sam and then joining all the townsmen to walk the three troublemaking Galenders out of town.
