  • Adorkable: Evelyn is a sweet, friendly young woman who has a very high-pitched voice (until she gets angry) and is obsessed with outdated bands.
  • Angst? What Angst?: In 2004, Evelyn is killed in a horrific accident at the age of twenty-three in front of her girlfriend Olivia. She then goes sixteen years without seeing her family before discovering that, because Riley ate her corpse, she cannot pass on and is condemned to live in the basement of the ghoul who ate her. Despite this, she keeps a remarkably chipper, lighthearted attitude that only wavers when she discovers her girlfriend did move on after her death and when she thinks Riley is going to be sentenced to Hell. Luckily, Riley's Heroic Sacrifice allows Evelyn to go between the physical and ethereal planes at her leisure. She chooses to stay with Riley, her new friend.
  • Creepy Cute: People tend to class the show as this, with one critic describing it as "Grisorable" - a mix of grisly and adorable.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The idea of sailors hunting a giant floating sentient boob called "Moby Tit" seems like a joke that would get a laugh once or twice, but wear out its welcome quickly, but the Hurricane of Puns and incessant jokes about Evelyn's own chest are so over-the-top that it quickly becomes hysterial.
  • He Really Can Act: Alexis Bristowe knocks it out of the park for "Tenderhearted in Tallahassee," convincingly playing Evelyn when she possesses Riley, and nailing her heartbreak during her conversation with Olivia.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Riley can be an asshole sometimes, but they have a lot of mental health and self-esteem issues and live with their emotionally abusive mother. To make matters worse, their father refuses to stand up to her, and their disabilities make it difficult for them to hold down a steady job, so moving into their own place isn't really a viable option. Their circumstances, combined with the fact that they are genuinely trying to do better and have become nicer after meeting Evelyn, makes it easy to sympathize with them even when they're being a jerk.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Oh, come on, did anyone really think Riley would really go to Hell at the end of Season One?
  • Love to Hate: Todd is an insufferable, condescending creep who exhibits a staggering amount of petty cruelty, caring only for himself and profits. However, his episodes are some of the most entertaining in the series, and it's always satisfying to watch our favorite ghost and ghoul duo bring him down.
  • Nausea Fuel: When one of your main characters is a flesh-eating monster with terrible hygiene, it's occasionally gonna get gross.
    • In Episode 4, Riley shares that they ate their own appendix to avoid getting appendicitis.
    • In Episode 5, Riley drinking mayo is so repulsive it almost makes Todd barf.
    • After consuming an ungodly cocktail of drugs in Episode 7, Shaz has what they describe as a "Three-Hole Problem" in Riley's bathroom.
    • In Episode 10, Florida Man mentions masturbating loudly to My Little Pony fan animations.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • The Agamemnon Condoms ad presented by Zeus is considered by many to be one of the stand-out scenes of the pilot. Zeus never returns.
    • All of the demons in episode 15.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Riley opening up about how their mom's verbal abuse has affected their self-esteem in Episode 9.
    • "Tenderhearted in Tallahassee" is utterly heartbreaking. Evelyn finds out her old girlfriend has moved on with her life and got married, leaving her for good.
    • "Speed-Dating Always Works" ends with Evelyn accidentally freeing three of the ghosts she matches with and allowing them to pass on to the afterlife. It's sweet, but it's also sad since she was hoping to make a connection and get started on moving on from Olivia. Especially sad is Left-Hand Letty's passing, since she and Evelyn had just agreed to a date and they seemed to be hitting it off. We'll never know if that would've gone anywhere long-term, but they deserved to have a chance to give it a try.
  • The Woobie:
