- Moral Event Horizon: Though the Vampires do a number of reprehensible acts — kidnapping Philipe's innocent mother, murdering kind old Mr. Metadier, blowing up an entire ship full of people and leaving no survivors just to rescue Irma — they cross it very early on by murdering Marfa simply because they hope it will discourage Philipe.
- Signature Scene:
- Marfa Koutiloff's dance performance, despite being in the film for only a couple of minutes, is one of its most well-known scenes.
- Irma Vep performing at the cabaret and her distinctive snarl is one of the most well-known images of her, apart from her sneaking around in her catsuit.
- Strangled by the Red String: Romance is not one of the film's strong suits. Philipe spontaneously acquires a fiancée one episode and marries her in the next.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Moreno is a significant character up until the eighth episode, where he's ceremoniously killed offscreen at the start. Given that he was the only Worthy Opponent to the Vampires besides Philipe and Mazamette, it's disappointing to see him have such a downbeat conclusion.
- Vindicated by History: Received negative reviews from critics due to the morality and lack of cinematic techniques. However it was popular with wartime audiences and is now considered the masterpiece of the director Louis Feuillade.
