YMMV / LEGO Super Mario

Go To

  • Accidental Nightmare Fuel: The main electronic figures have their eyes and mouth go completely black when they aren't turned on, which many people consider to be very creepy-looking.
  • Broken Base: While many love the unique look and the interactive, freedom based nature of the brand, finding it to be a genius way of combining the design philosophies of Nintendo and LEGO, there are many others who are disappointed with the different approach and wished LEGO simply made traditional sets with mini figures instead.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With Lego Sonic, as to be expected from the rivalry the video game franchises have. It's especially notable as Lego Sonic utilizes mini figures as their absence in the Mario line lead to a major Broken Base.
  • I Knew It!:
    • The Bowser's Airship set was predicted by fans before it was announced, though their mock-ups didn't quite anticipate just how impressive the final product would be.
    • After introducing Luigi as a second electronic Minifig, a lot of fans expected Luigi's Mansion sets would be in the works. They were right.
  • Memetic Mutation: People have made jokes about Lego Mario's (as well as the other electronic character's) creepiness due to his pitch black eyes and mouth when he is turned off. One notable example is Nathaniel Bandy's How LEGO Mario TRIGGERS You!, which depicts Lego Mario as being a possessed murderer who served as a recurring antagonist for several videos before he was finally killed off in LEGO Luigi: Friend or Foe?
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: The Frog Suit was originally considered a strange combination of Too Awesome to Use and Power-Up Letdown due to its design - it allowed for extremely fast and precise controls underwater but used a weird hopping movement on land that disabled Mario's crouch, meaning it could actually make a level Unintentionally Unwinnable if there was a narrow spot he had to pass through. For the LEGO set, it's basically free coins given randomly when jumping, and doesn't cause any kind of weird caveats.
