YMMV / Laid-Back Camp

Go To

  • Adorkable: The instances where Rin is shown camping alone are notable due to them showing how dorky her sense of humor is.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The series' first opening theme, "Shiny Days" by Asaka, is a catchy and grooving beat to get viewers enthused for some camping.
    • The first ending theme, "Fuyubiyori"note  by Eri Sasaki, is a soothing acoustic tune that matches the cozy resolution to every episode.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "Comfy Camp" for the series as a whole, due to its cozy and relaxing feel.
    • "Cinnamon Bun" and "Girl Kirby" for Nadeshiko.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With Metal Gear, of all things, due to Akio Ōtsuka (the Japanese voice for Solid Snake) lending his voice as both the narrator and Rin's grandfather in the anime adaptation.
    • Nadeshiko is often compared to Kirby due to having a similar color palette and being an adorable glutton. As a result, Laid-Back Camp fans go hand-in-hand with fans of Kirby, doubly so with the release of Kirby Star Allies coming at the tail end of the anime's initial airing.
    • With Super Cub, due to it similarly being an Iyashikei series set in Yamanashi prefecture and devoted to its natural wonders.
  • Les Yay:
    • Rin remarks that Nadeshiko's sister Sakura is rather beautiful, at least compared to Nadeshiko, leading some people to ship the two.
    • While joking about Nadeshiko's cooking, both Aki and Ena agree that they would both like to marry her one day, much to Aoi's confusion.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Comfy."Explanation
      • "Maximum Comf."Explanation
    • "MUST PROTECC THAT SMILE"Explanation
    • Secret Society BLANKET spreads its influence further.Explanation
  • Moe: Most of the characters are female and they're designed to be very cute with appealing personalities and mannerisms; however, the series itself is less about inspiring protective feelings for the characters and more about seeing them relaxed and comfortable while camping. An interview with the anime's producer, Shouichi Hotta, reveals that they deliberately tried to avoid making the anime too moe in order to reach a wider audience.
  • Self-Fanservice: While Aoi is noticeably curvier than the other girls, fanart often depicts her as more voluptuous then she actually is.
  • Squick: It's a relaxing, gentle Iyashikei show that just so happens to depict an extremely graphic, bloody eel gutting in episode 3 of the second season.
    • Similarly, the end of S2E11 has Aoi and her sister making Tokoroten using a Mt Fuji mascot press, which comes out as an awkward-looking pile of jellied seaweed and is really rather gross.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • The anime's first opening theme, "SHINY DAYS", sounds very similar The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and "ABC". The internet didn't pass up on the opportunity.
    • Episode 4 has a take on "Thus Spake Zarathustra" during the moon landing sequence, which is odd since the original composition is in the public domain.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel:
    • The anime's artstyle of the characters, with Nadeshiko's expressions being the usual kicker for saccharine.
    • The anime's ending theme is a more literal example.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Nadeshiko is revealed to have been Formerly Fat due to her eating habits. The fact that she lost weight after her sister Sakura suddenly got fed up with her eating so much and made her bike laps around Lake Hamana can come across as unnecessarily harsh body-shaming to a western audience.
      • Usually, the counterpoint to this is that Nadeshiko is much healthier, happier, and possesses immense stamina thanks to this treatment.
    • The fact that the club jokes about Ms. Toba's alcoholism is eyebrow raising, given a teacher with her problems would rapidly be fired from a western school.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Minami Toba's sibling. Bishōnen or Bifauxnen Episode twelve reveals the character in question is a woman named Ryouko(the "ko" suffix denotes that it's a woman's name).
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: It's a comfy, relaxing series about a group of friends going camping around the country. There is pretty much nothing overtly objectionable about the series (aside from Minami's occasional drunken antics), but the manga runs in a seinen magazine and the anime tends to air late at night.
