YMMV / Lady Jewelpet

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: Lillian/Cayenne was initially seen as a non-squicky alternative to Momona/Cayenne, but the very early reveal that Lillian and Cayenne are actually siblings turned the fandom off the idea. Later it turns out they aren't siblings, but by that time she is long over Cayenne and having a lot of chemistry with Miura.
  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • In the preview for episode 2...
Ruby: Next time on Lady Jewelpet, "A Lovely Meal for Ladies"!
Momona: Everything, but not Prince Cayenne!
    • Also, Top of Lady. If your brain has been into the gutter, that has a completely dirty implication to it.
  • Arc Fatigue: The late episodes involving the Beasts and the Door to Chaos are often considered the weakest part of the show. It seems to go on forever with several characters going through melodramatic deaths that aren't (in at least one case, multiple times), Momona's indecision being a retread of Chiari's, and Elena's tacked-on character development.
  • Ass Pull: Ruby blocking Romeo's sword with her Jewel Pad. Why? Because before the eye-catch, we clearly see the Jewel Pad flying away from her with the force of the impact.
  • Awesome Music:
    • "Your Love", essentially the best opening theme in the anime franchise so far. It sounds like a 90s song that the Spice Girls would sing!
    • Also worth mentioning is that Jun Ichikawa's soundtrack is as amazing as the anime itself.
  • Base-Breaking Character: People either love Luea for her design (like a Hot Topic Ruby) and backstory or hate her because of her jerkass personality.
  • Broken Base:
    • Lady's serious tone broke the Jewelpet fanbase completely, and camps became neatly divided between supporters of comedic and dramatic seasons.
    • Some fans are displeased with the drastically diminished role of Jewelpets, while others are glad that humans are back on the spotlight.
  • Fan Nickname:
  • Franchise Original Sin: Lady (as well as Mewkledreamy, another anime based on a Sanrio brand) is so focused on humans that the pets have a drastically diminished role, giving it a Broken Base. While the first series and Twinkle were also human-focused, the pets' role in both series was as big as that of the humans'.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Mizuki's rose motif mirrors that of Milky Rose's. They have the same voice actress.
    • Lady Rector's death has her disintegrate in someone's arms similarly to Spider-Man's death in Avengers: Infinity War.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: It's Luea's debut season.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Sasuga Ruby."
    • The Ruby Car.
    • RUN RUN RUN RUN WITH YOU
    • Ruby/Lady Boot, I don't feel so good.
  • Moe: Charon, a shy, glasses-wearing bookworm.
  • No Yay: Some people take issue with Momona/Cayenne, because Cayenne looks a lot like Momona's cousin (who she had a crush on).
  • Periphery Demographic: The anime is aimed for older girls this time around (8-12 years old) but it has a reasonable balance of fanservice to the much older crowd.
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: Lady seems tailored for this with its cast of 4 Petit Ladies and 4 Princes (later both get increased to 5 each) who must inevitably get together sometime in the future (it's canonically mandatory). It becomes complicated when one of the Princes is one girl's brother and looks like the cousin of another. The debates over the ideal combinations that avoid Incest Subtext must be seen to be believed.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: The first few episodes can come off as way too slow for some viewers, especially compared to some other seasons.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: For anyone who was disappointed with Kira Deco and Happiness, the tense and dramatic tone in this installment is positively received, favorably comparing it to Twinkle. On other side of fanbase however...
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: For fans of Kira Deco and Happiness, Lady with its relative lack of comedy is a turn for the worse.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Elena. Introduced very late in the show, she doesn't get proper development until episode 48, which is generally considered too little, too late. It's a shame, because what IS shown in the episode hints at a rather fascinating character.
    • Not giving the Princes their own Mentors can be seen as this for the Jewelpets, as a wasted chance to give them a little more focus than what they got in this season.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Momona's crush on her first cousin isn't seen as weird or squicky in Japan.
    • The entirety of the first episode can come off as this. A random girl is thrown into a world where she is forced to enter a contest to become a traditionally proper and completely feminine lady. She is expected to throw away everything about herself and just go along with the ride in order to make herself more feminine and desirable in the eyes of the higher ups and everyone else. And all of this is completely against her will. Doesn't this just scream sexism?note
