- Adaptation Displacement: Nowadays, this film is arguably much better known than its source novel, any of the other Mike Hammer novels, and all the various film and TV versions of the other novels, even though most of them are Truer to the Text than this one.
- Aluminum Christmas Trees: The movie is often credited for Deconstruction of the Private Detective protagonist by making Mike Hammer a Sociopathic Hero. Except, Mickey Spillane stated that was true in I, The Jury. His sadistic Pay Evil unto Evil personality is Truer to the Text.
- Retroactive Recognition: Cloris Leachman as Christina Bailey.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The movie has a very cynical view of life. The sympathetic characters are killed or seriously mistreated. The best anyone can hope to do is survive, and the film's ending even calls that into question.
